LARSON FIRES 66 TO TAKE BOYS DIVISION
LEAD IN RAIN-SOAKED
COMPAQ JUNIOR CLASSIC AT ENGLISH TURN
Wooster and Jones co-leaders in Girls Division
NEW ORLEANS - Kevin Larsen of Santa Barbara,
Calif., fired a second-round 66 to take the Boys Division
lead at the 24th annual Compaq Junior Classic at English
Turn. Sara Jones of Valencia, Calif., and Alexis Wooster
of Winnekta, Ill., share the Girls Division lead entering
Friday's final round.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association
for the 13th year on English Turn Golf & Country
Club's par-72 layout, the field includes 86 players
representing 19 states and Germany. Past participants
include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard,
David Duval, and Grace Park.
Thursday's play was marred by almost a five-hour weather
delay as English Turn's course was flooded by a heavy
downpour.
Larsen enters Friday's final round of the 54-hole event
with a four-shot lead over Robert Stone of Dallas and
first-round leader Nathan Smith of Soquel, Calif. Larsen's
round of 66 included seven birdies versus only one bogey.
"It was pretty much a mistake-free round,"
said Larsen, who carded a first-round 70 for a total
of 136. "The only bogey I had was a three-putt,
so that is a good indication of how I played."
For Friday, Larsen said his game plan was simple.
"I want to keep the same mind-set and not worry
about the water," he said. "That won't be
easy to do, considering every hole out here has some
type of water hazzard."
Smith shot 75 on the day for a two-day total of 140.
He was penalized two strokes for taking a stroke before
play officially resumed after the weather delay. Stone
stayed in the hunt with an even-par round of 72 for
a two-day total of 140.
Rounding out the top five are Tulane signee Chris Wheeler
of Allen, Texas, at 141, and Chris Elliott of Plano,
Texas, at 145.
In the Girls Division, Jones continued her mastery
of the front nine, shooting a 33-39-72 on the day for
a two-day total of 147. For the tournament, she is 8-under-par
on the front nine.
"The rain delay helped settle me down,"
said Jones, who started the day on the 10th tee. "I
can't explain why I've played so well on the front nine.
I've taken advantage of strong iron shots by making
the putts."
Wooster's totals of 71-76-147 was good enough for
a first-place tie with Jones.
"I lost my concentration after the delay today,"
Wooster said. "Sara was playing so well and I was
just trying to keep up. It should be an interesting
final round."
Rounding out the top three is Alexis Rather of Tupelo,
Miss., at 149.
The final round of the Compaq Junior Classic at English
Turn begins Friday at 7:30 a.m. For more information,
