AJGA TOLDO GROUP EASTERN CANADIAN
JUNIOR
Sutton Creek Golf & Country Club
Essex, Ontario
July 23-26, 2001
LAFONTAINE BIRDIES HIS WAY TO BOYS
DIVISION TITLE
Kim's first AJGA win comes by seven shots
ESSEX, Ontario - Shawn Lafontaine of Cobourg,
Ontario, used a birdie-birdie finish to hold off Andrew
Parr of London, Ontario, and win the Boys Division of
the AJGA Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior. In much
less dramatic fashion, Alice Kim of Los Angeles won
the Girls Division by a comfortable seven-shots.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
The AJGA Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior featured
85 players representing 14 states and three provinces.
Of the 85 players in the field, 43 hailed from Canada.
Lafontaine put himself in a precarious position on
the back nine by double bogeying No. 10 and then bogeying
Nos. 14, 15 and 16. Lafontaine bounced back with birdies
on Nos. 17 and 18, however, to claim his first career
AJGA title.
"I got pretty mad at myself after bogeying 14,
15 and 16," said Lafontaine, who finished 69-74-72--215.
"At worst, I knew I had to birdie the last two
holes. I had to put the pressure on myself to do it,
but it all worked out for the best."
After sinking a 25-foot putt on No. 17 for birdie,
Lafontaine put his third shot on the 516-yard, par-5,
No. 18 within 10 feet, but Parr put the pressure on
his fellow countryman by sticking his second shot within
15 feet. After Parr missed his eagle putt, Lafontaine
drained his birdie putt, pumping his fist in approval
of his feat.
"I usually don't show that much emotion, but I
was pretty proud of myself," said Lafontaine. "The
feeling is tough to explain. I'm just excited for my
first AJGA win."
Rounding out the top five of the Boys Division were
Parr at 216, Bill Lewis of Westfield, Mass., and John
Locke of Ashland, Ohio, at 217 and Nick Kenney of Etobicoke,
Ontario, at 221.
In the Girls Division, Kim, who started the day three-shots
ahead of her nearest competition, blew the field away
by shooting a 75 to take her first AJGA crown as well.
Kim struggled through the front nine, including a double
bogey on No. 9, but rebounded from that with a 1-under-par
35 on the second nine to cruise to a championship.
Kim birdied three holes on the back nine, including
No. 12, which seemed to turn things around for her.
"After the front nine, the birdie on No. 12 made
things a little easier for the rest of the round,"
said Kim, who like Lafontaine, finished out her round
with two birdies.
"I was pretty confident coming in," said
Kim. "I've been hitting the ball well prior to
this. Today, I just wanted to play it a little more
cautious with my mid-length putts and my approach shots."
Joining Kim in the top thee of the Girls Division were
Erin Borowiec of South Lyon, Mich., at 230 and Clare
Lucey of Winnetka, Ill., at 233.
