LEE'S CAREER-BEST 65 LEADS THE FIELD AT CIMARRON
Baca fires a 29 on the back nine on his way to leading the Boys Division

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach, Calif., carded a 6-under-par 65 Tuesday to shoot the low round of the day at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Cimarron. Michael Baca of Fresno, Calif., shot a 5-under 66 to claim the lead in the Boys Division.

The event is one of seven Compaq/David Leadbetter Junior All-Star Series events conducted by the American Junior Golf Association in 2001. The Junior All-Star events are limited to players ages 13 to 15 and were created in 1998 to give younger AJGA members more playing opportunities. This tournament at Cimarron Golf Club features a total 73 boys and girls representing 17 states and Canada.

The 14-year-old Lee, who is shooting for her first AJGA title, carded 12 pars and six birdies on the day. Her score of 65 was her best ever, her previous best being a 69.

"I didn't think the course was too hard. I was just really glad it was not too windy today," Lee said, noting the strong winds in the practice round Monday.

Lee, who had five top-10 AJGA finishes in 2000 -- including two runner-up showings - was aided by a stretch of four staight birdies on the back nine Tuesday.

In second place behind Lee is Sommer Scholl of Riverside, Calif., who shot an even-par 71. Vanessa Brockett of Los Angeles rounds out the top three after carding a 73.

In the Boys Divison, Michael Baca was on fire during his first nine holes, carding six birdies for a score of 29 on the back side.

"I hit all nine greens on the back and left my ball close to the hole," Baca said. "Tomorrow my goal is to be solid and to just try and shoot par on every hole."

Will Haydon of Palo Alto, Calif.; Andy Park of San Diego, Calif.; and Chanin Puntawong of Bradenton, Fla., fired 2-under-par 69s to share second place in the Boys Division. Six boys shot 1-under-par 70 to tie for fifth, making it a total of 10 players under par in the first round at Cimarron.

Action will continue Wednesday with tee times running from 7:00-8:48 a.m. For more information on the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Cimarron, contact AJGA Headquarters at (760) 770-3905.
