TWO GIRLS FILL FINAL SPOTS FOR AJGA
AVILA JUNIOR CLASSIC
Four players gather medalist honors in Boys Division
Tarpon Springs, Fla.-- Ten spots were filled
for the AJGA Avila Junior Classic in the Pepsi Qualifier
Series presented by ClubCorp held at the The Westin
Innisbrook Resort, Island Course. Monique Gesualdi of
St. Augustine, Fla., garnered medalist honors in the
Girls Division with a 4-over-par 76. Jerad Harklau of
Heath, Texas, Stephan Bobe of Pensacola, Fla., Jacob
Davis of Deland, Fla., and Chris Erwin of Tampa, Fla.,
all fired 2-under-par 70s to tie for medalist honors
in the Boys Division.
The Avila Junior Classic, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, features 84 players from 16
states, Bermuda and Japan. Forty-nine juniors from Florida
and nine Polo Junior Golf All-Americans are included
in the field.
Gesualdi will appear in her fourth AJGA tournament,
by taking medalist honors with a 4-over-par 76. Gesualdi
played a steady round making 14 pars and 4 bogeys.
"I am very happy to get into this tournament,"
Gesualdi said. "I had a difficult time putting,
but I chipped very well and got up-and-down several
times."
Gesualdi knows what she needs to improve heading into
Tuesday's first-round.
"I have to improve my iron play," Gesualdi
said. "I just need to hit more greens and give
myself opportunities to make birdies."
Joining Gesualdi in the field will be Sookhee Baek
of Bradenton, Fla. Baek shot a 6-over-par-78.
In the Boys Division, Harklau, Bobe, Davis and Erwin
will all make their first AJGA tournament appearance.
Harklau had five birdies en route to his 34-36--70.
"I hit a lot of greens and made a lot of putts,"
Harklau said. "The key to playing well is making
putts. Fortunately today, I made quite a few."
Bobe had nines of 34-36 for his round of 70. He had
three birdies in his round.
"I got up-and-down quite a bit," Bobe said.
"I need to hit more greens to do well in the tournament."
Davis also had five birdies in nines of 35-35--70.
"I had some good misses. When I missed shots,
I avoided trouble," said Davis. "I need to
strike the ball better this week."
Erwin had perhaps the most up-and-down round of the
four. The 18-year-old went out in 31, but bogeyed his
last four holes for a 70.
"I had seven birdies in the round, but ended on
a downer," Erwin said. "I just need to finish
my rounds better in the tournament."
Also qualifying in the Boys Division are Patrick Gibson
of Thonotosassa, Fla., and Marco Morales of Coral Gables,
Fla., with 1-under-par 71s and Hochul Kim of Tampa,
Fla., and Tyler Rucarean of Gainesville, Fla., at 1-over-par
73.
