Tampa, Florida
July 2-5, 2001
NO ONE CAN SEEM TO CRACK THE CODE
Poccia leads Boys Division with 2-under-par 142
TAMPA, FLA.-Mallory Code of Tampa shot a 1-over-par
73 to maintain her grip on the top of the leaderboard
in the Girls Division after the second-round of the
AJGA Avila Junior Classic held at the Avila Golf and
Country Club. Code's two-day total of 1-under-par 143
leads Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va., by two shots.
In the Boys Division, Marco Poccia of Gansevoort, N.Y.,
leads at 2-under-par 142.
The Avila Junior Classic, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, features 84 players from 15
states, Japan, Mexico and Bermuda. Included in the field
are nine Polo Junior Golf All-Americans.
Code followed up her first-round 2-under-par 70 with
a 1-over-par 73 with nines of 36-37.
"I played pretty consistent today," Code
said. "I got up-and-down a lot today. That's good,
because I saved par, but I didn't give myself many realistic
birdie opportunities. The opportunities that I had,
I missed."
Code had 15 pars, one birdie and two bogies in her
round, and hit 11-of-18 greens in regulation. Code also
battled dehydration down the stretch in temperatures
that soared into the low-90s.
"The heat wasn't a big factor until the end,"
Code said. "I got dehydrated the last two holes,
but it didn't affect my play that much. I just fought
through it."
The 16-year-old Code is gunning for her fourth AJGA
tournament title and is looking to improve in tomorrow's
final round.
"My ball-striking could improve," Code said.
"I need to hit more greens and give myself birdie
chances."
Beers, who shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first-round,
fired an even-par 72 to pull within two shots of Code
at 1-over-par 145. Beers recorded two birdies and two
bogies in her round. Nicole Melton (74-74) of San Antonio,
Texas, and Morgan Pressel (75-73) of Boca Raton, Fla.,
are tied for third at 4-over-par 148.
In the Boys Division, Poccia shot a 2-under-par 70
for a two-day total of 2-under-par 142. He leads Ty
Callahan of Tampa by two shots.
Poccia had three birdies and an eagle in his round
and shot nines of 36-34. Poccia overcame a slow start,
bogeying No. 1.
"I didn't want to get up this morning, because
I was so sore from riding the rollercoasters at the
Busch Gardens Cookout last night," Poccia joked.
He was hanging around even-par until he birdied No.
15 and eagled No. 16. He also parred No. 18 after hitting
his drive into the water hazard.
"I played basic, steady golf," Poccia said.
"I managed to keep the ball in play and that really
enables you to score well on this course."
Poccia used strong putting to aid his round .
"My short game was nothing special, but I hit
a lot of greens," Poccia said. "I had several
birdie putts within 20 feet and I made quite a few of
them.
"I've never been in this situation before, and
it feels pretty good," Poccia commented on leading
after 36 holes.
Callahan, who was a late addition and is a member at
Avila Golf and Country Club, is two shots back at even-par
144. He has rounds of 71-73. Ryan Blaum (73-72) of Coral
Gables, Fla., and Peter Lyon (74-71) of Cape Coral,
Fla., are tied for third at 1-over-par 145. James Dickey
(72-74) of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Chris Erwin (73-73)
of Tampa, and Chase Baldwin (76-70) of Plant City, Fla.,
are tied for fifth at 2-over-par 146.
The final-round concludes Thursday with tee times from
7:30-9:27 of Nos. 1 and 10 tees. For more information
