VIRDELL GRABS MEDALIST HONORS IN ABILENE WITH A 2-UNDER-PAR 70
Hull secures top spot in Girls Division with an even-par 72

ABILENE, Texas-Nathan Virdell of Llano, Texas, fired a 2-under-par 70 to grab medalist honors in the Boys Division at the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior Qualifier. Megan Hull of Mansfield, Texas, secured Girls Division honors with an even-par 72 at the Fairways Oaks Country Club.

The 18-hole qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, included 97 players representing six states and Switzerland. Ten spots were on the line in the Boys Division and three spots in the Girls Division for entry into the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior to be held July 16-19 at the Abilene Country Club.

Virdell connected on four birdies, including three on the back nine. On the 150-yard, par-3 16th, the 17-year-old set-up his birdie with a 9-iron over the water to within three feet of the flagstick. Virdell rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to finish the backside at 1-under-par 35.

"I felt good today," Virdell said. "I was hitting the ball off the tee very well and I didn't three-putt all day."

Colton Turnquist of Austin, Texas, finished one stroke back at 35-36--71.

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Justin Cole of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; Martin Piller of Duncanville, Texas; Matt Page of The Woodlands, Texas; Derek Smith of Elk City, Okla; Jeff Kiecke of Austin, Texas; and Michael Douthit of Palestine, Texas.

Dustin Byrd of Fort Worth, Texas, and Cannon Cahill of Madisonville, Texas, each qualified through a sudden-death playoff.

In the Girls Division, Hull shot an even-par 72 to take medalist honors and earn entry into the tournament field.

"My putting was very good today," Hull said. "I'm going to try the best I can this week and have a good time while I'm at it."

Also qualifying in the Girls Division were Stacy Brown of The Woodlands, Texas, with a 77 and Brenda Norris of Spring Branch, Texas, at 78.

First-round action for the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior begins at 7:00 a.m Tuesday at Abilene Country Club. For more information regarding the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior, please contact tournament headquarters at (915) 692-2586.
