Overland Park, Kansas

August 9 -12, 2004

CHEN, GERSHON, HU AND LONG FLY TO THE TOP WITH 3-UNDER-PAR 69s

Nunn shoots to the top in the Girls Division

Overland Park, Kan.—Sixty-nine was the lucky number of the day for Jeffrey Chen, Brad Gershon, Mu Hu and Jace Long, who all climbed to the top of the leaderboard with first-round scores of 3-under-par 69 at the Lockton Kansas City Junior.  Lucy Nunn took a two-stroke lead over her competitors with a 3-over-par 75 in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton Kansas City Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 101 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 24 states and China, including 11 Kansas natives.  The event is being held at Milburn Golf & Country Club.

Gershon, 18, of Overland Park, Kan., wasn’t surprised with his first round score.  Milburn Golf & Country Club is his home course and he expected to shoot low.

“I played a solid round today,” he said.  “I did what I wanted to do with my game plan.  For the next two rounds I need to stay relaxed and focused so I can keep shooting 69s.  I can do it because I left a few shots out there.”

Long, 14, of Dixon, Mo., started the day with a birdie on No. 1 and found the confidence he needed for the rest of the round.

“I’m very excited to be one of the leaders,” he said.  “If I hit it straight for the next two rounds I should continue to play well.  I better play well because I’m missing the first day of school for this tournament.”

Chen, 15, of Walnut, Calif., said that he had a fun day out on the course.

“I was hitting greens and making putts,” he said.  “I had a lot of great saves out there that really helped to keep my score low.  I saved par from 50 yards three times today.  I had a lot of fun getting up and down for those.”

Hu, 14, of Shen Zhen, China, said he played well but could have done a lot better.

“I was hitting the ball well, but I had a lot of trouble reading the greens,” he said.  “All my shots were good though.  If I keep shooting under par, I’ll be up there at the top.”

Behind the leaders are Brent Potts of Broken Arrow, Okla., Nick Geyer of Agoura Hills, Calif., Dean Merrill of Kansas City, Mo., and Adam Long of St. Charles, Mo., with even-par 72s.

Of the Girls Division, Nunn, 17, of Lawton, Okla., got off to a slow start that was turned around for the better on the par-5 6th.

“On No. 6, I chipped in for eagle,” she said.  “That helped me to finish even on the front nine and carried me through the rest of the round to help me end on a happy note with a birdie on No. 18.”

Nunn said she’s going to work on hitting fairways and greens for the rest of the rounds.

Following Nunn are Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., and Shannon Yocum of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., with 5-over-par 77s.

Second-round tee times will run from 7 a.m. – 11:57 a.m., Wednesday at Milburn Golf & Country Club.
