GALLETTI, JR., REMAINS AT THE TOP AND WINS AT 2-UNDER

Suyetsugu emerges as the Girls Division winner in the final round

VANDENBERG AFB, Calif.Roberto Galletti, Jr., was back in action in the final round and grabbed onto the Boys Division title at the AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior with a tournament total of 2-under-par 214.  Xyra Suyetsugu charged ahead in the final round to claim the title in the Girls Division with a tournament total of 7-over-par 223.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior featured 84 players from ten states and Canada, including 73 California natives.  The fifth annual AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior was a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that was held at Marshallia Ranch Golf Course for the third consecutive year.

Galletti, Jr., 16, of Clayton, Calif., shot an even-par 72 in the final round and proudly claimed his first AJGA win at the AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior.  Although many obstacles were working against Galetti on the back nine, he stuck it out and maintained his lead.

“I was 5-up going into the back nine,” he said.  “Then I doubled No. 13, had a lost ball in a tree on No.15 and before I knew it I was only 1-up.”

Galletti ended the round in style on No. 18, making a 20-footer for birdie to win the tournament.

“It’s such a relief to win my first AJGA event,” he said.  “I played pretty consistent and I hit it good all week long.  All I had to do was worry about my game and not the other competitors because anything can happen.”

In second place was Doug Fortner of Tustin, Calif., with a tournament total of 214.  In third place was Tim Cha of Chino Hills,Calif., at 216, followed by Larry Wong of Diamond Bar, Calif., in fourth at 218 and Samuel Kim of Cerritos, Calif., in fifth with a tournament total of 220.

Suyetsugu, 18, of Honolulu, Hawaii, won her first AJGA event she’s ever played in.

“It’s a great feeling to win because I really didn’t expect it,” she said.  “I didn’t even realize I was in the lead.  I was just playing my game, so it was a nice surprise at the end.”

Even with a lost ball on the last hole, Suyetsugu fought it out and finished with a 3-over-par 75 in the final round.

“I was just playing against the course,” she said.  “I had a couple of birdies which helped cancel out the bogies and I just tried not to worry about the competition.  I took it one hole at a time.”

In second place for the Girls Division was Allison Goodman of San Diego, with a 226 tournament total, followed by Mariko Makabe of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., in third place with a 227 tournament total.
