CHA MOVES AHEAD WITH A 2-STROKE LEAD IN ROUND ONE

Osborn shoots 4-under in the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. The day was hot and the conditions were challenging, but there was no stopping Tim Cha who shot a 5-under-par 67, putting him in the lead for the Boys Division in the first round of the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills.  Jennifer Osborn came out on top in the Girls Division with a 4-under-par 68.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills features 84 players from seven states and Canada, including 70 California natives. The 23rd annual Lennar Junior at Mission Hills is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Mission Hills Country Club — Arnold Palmer Course and began on Tuesday.

Cha, 17, of Chino Hills, Calif., said he had a successful first round that gave him the confidence he needs for the rest of the tournament.  A pair of eagles on Nos. 3 and 15 helped him to soar to the top along with three birdies on the front nine.

“I was 1-over on the front nine until I made eagle on No. 3, and that got me going for the rest of the round,” he said.  “In tomorrow’s round I plan on taking it one shot at a time.  I’m going to play my own game and play my best.”

Cha said he found a way to make the course work for him.

“If you can hit it well and control your ball, it’s accessible,” he said.  “If you can putt, then it’ll help you to go low and that’s what I plan on doing tomorrow.”

Following Cha are Matthew Vickers of Fairfield, Calif., Rory Hie of Lakewood, Calif., and Brian Locke of Los Angeles, with scores of 3-under-par 69 and Sasan Shahi of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Lucas Lee of Torrance, Calif., Jamie Lovemark of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Jeff Koprivetz of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Brett Kanda of La Crescenta, Calif., with scores of 2-under-par 70.

Jennifer Osborn, 17, of Huntington Beach, Calif., said she had great chances for birdie because she hit her irons so well.

“I had so many opportunities to go low,” she said.  “I birdied three out of my first four holes of the day so that gave me a cushion to sit on.  It felt good because they were tricky holes.”

Coming in behind Osborn are Tiffany Joh of San Diego, at 2-under-par 70, and Esther Choe of La Quinta Calif., at even-par 72.

Second-round tee times will run from 6:30 - 8:27 a.m., Wednesday at Mission Hills Country Club.
