WILLIAMS OPENS TWO-SHOT LEAD IN OSSO JUNIOR AT OAK TREE

Wright fires even-par 70 to lead Girls Division by two shots

EDMOND, Okla. Only two players managed to break par at Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course in the first round of the OSSO Junior at Oak Tree. Colton Williams of Jacksboro, Texas, weathered a one-hour, thirty-five minute rain delay to post a 3-under-par 67 and holds a two-shot lead over William Kropp of Edmond, Okla.

Heather Wright of Houston, Texas, fired an even-par 70 – including a 3-under-par 32 on the front nine – and holds a two-shot lead over Lucy Nunn of Lawton, Okla., in the Girls Division.

The OSSO Junior at Oak Tree is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course. The tournament features 142 players, ages 12-18, from 15 states, including 59 from Oklahoma and 39 from Texas.

“I got off to a pretty good start,” said Williams, who birdied two of his first three holes. “I hit lots of greens and I just didn’t really get in any trouble.”

Williams, who birdied five holes including the 458-yard par-4 second, was one of few players to tame Oak Tree.

“I love it here,” Williams said. “It’s a great course. I just hope I continue to play well on it.”

Kropp shot 2-over-par 37 on his first nine holes before making a move on the back nine. Spurred on by three birdies in his first four holes, Kropp fired a second-nine 32.

“I just played solid,” said Kropp, who lives near Oak Tree. “I kept getting up and down and I putted really well on the back nine.”

Alone in third at even-par is Robert Streb of Edmond, Okla. Justin Bond of Rockwall, Texas, and Austin Bowman of Pryor, Okla., are tied for fourth at 1-over-par 71.

“I was making some good putts on the front side,” said Wright, who was one of 71 players who were forced to take shelter when storms rolled through central Oklahoma.

But not even the weather could stop Wright, who birdied two of her first three holes after the delay en-route to taking the first-round lead in the Girls Division.

“It didn’t really affect me at all,” she said.

Nunn fired a 2-over par 72 to claim sole possession of second place in the Girls Division. Michaela Cavener of Tulsa, Okla., and Lauren Espinosa of Hickory Creek, Texas are tied for third at 4-over-par 74.
