HILL SHATTERS GIRLS DIVISION RECORD AT FIELDSTONE
Davis atop Boys Division leaderboard with first-round 70

GREENVILLE, De. - Not even a blown-out tire could stop Nannette Hill of Pelham Manor, N.Y., from breaking Nancy Lopez’s low-round record of 71 at the Fieldstone Golf Club on Tuesday.  Stranded at a gas station earlier in the morning, Hill made it to the course in time to card a 5-under-par 66 and take a 2-stroke lead on the rest of the Girls Division.  In the Boys Division, Kyle Davis of Kennett Square, Pa., is the lone boy under par after the first round with a 1-under-par 70.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Randall Parker Shootout at Fieldstone features 84 players, 66 boys and 18 girls, ages 12-18 from 12 states and Paraguay.  The 54-hole stroke play event is being held at the Fieldstone Golf Club after a one-year absence.

Hill carded eight birdies on the day and played the back nine at 5-under-par.  She credited her strong play to the familiar look of the Fieldstone track.

“Fieldstone is such a great fit for my game,” said Hill.  “This course is a lot like Totteridge in Pennsylvania, which is where I won an AJGA event last year.  I saw the course and knew that I could play well.”

Hill wasn’t the only one to break Lopez’s low-round record on Tuesday—Julieta Granada of Asuncion, Paraguay, and Stephanie Connelly of Pasadena, Md., finished at 68 and 70, respectively.

“I haven’t played this course a whole lot, so I was still getting to know the golf course,” said Granada, the newly-crowned Rolex Girls Junior Champion.  “Now that I know the greens better I can be a lot more aggressive with my second shots tomorrow.”

Unlike Granada, Davis used his experience at Fieldstone en route to four birdies on the day.

“If you’re playing this course for the first time and you shoot par, you’re doing really well,” said Davis, who will graduate from Unionville High School next year.  “I hit a lot of 3-irons off the tee and tried to keep it out of trouble.  You just can’t be too aggressive on this course.”

Two shots back of Davis are Pennsylvania native Greg Franko of Uniontown, and Lion Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., with first-round 1-over-par 72s.  Alone in fourth is place Maxwell Wyndorf of Chadds Ford, Pa., at 73.  Fellow Pennsylvania natives Billy Macknis of West Chester and Scott Kegerreis of Chambersburg, and David May of Auburn, N.Y., are tied in fifth place at 74.
