CALIFORNIANS COME OUT ON TOP AFTER ROUND ONE AT GLENWILD

Smith sits at even-par 71 for the Boys Division; Yocum at 3-over-par 74 for the Girls Division

PARK CITY, Utah Tyler Smith shot an even-par 71 to take the lead in the Boys Division and Shannon Yocum shot a 3-over-par 74 to capture the Girls Division lead Tuesday at the AJGA Glenwild Junior at the Glenwild Golf Club & Spa.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Glenwild Junior features 84 players from 14 states and Canada, including eight Utah natives. The event, in its inaugural year, is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being held at Glenwild Golf Club & Spa.

Smith, 16, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., said he couldn’t be any happier with the way he played during round one.  The eagle he carded on No. 3, along with the three birdies throughout the rest of the round helped him to an even-par round.

“I’ve never been in the lead before,” Smith said.  “It feels great.  I played really well for the first round so I think I could win this thing.”

Smith intends on staying focused throughout the next two rounds to maintain his lead.

“My plan is to keep it going out there,” he said.  “I can’t be tentative.  I just need to go for it.  I’m ready for tomorrow’s round to see what it brings.”

Following Smith with a 1-over-par 72 is Drew Kittleson, 15, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and behind him at 2-over-par 73 is Jordan Johnstun, 17, of LaGrange, Ga., Jeff Miller, 16, of Lone Tree, Colo., and Peter Ahn, 17, of Victoria, British Columbia.

In the Girls Division, Shannon Yocum, 17, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., said she was feeling great after her first round.  Her best shot was on No. 17 where she sank a 20-footer for birdie.  Her three other birdies helped her maintain her confidence from beginning to end.

“There are still 36 holes left to go so I know that things could change,” she said, “but I’m still feeling confident.  I feel like I have these greens.”

Yocum hopes to stay in the lead by hitting her fairways and greens.

Finishing up behind Yocum are Lila Barton, 14, of Dallas, at 5-over-par 76, and Jeana Dahl, 17, of Fargo, N.D., and Brooke Todare, 18, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., at 6-over-par 77.

Second-round tee times will run from 8 - 9:57 a.m., Wednesday at Glenwild Golf Club & Spa.
