KIDRON AND SCHULTZ TIED FOR FIRST-ROUND LEAD AT 1-UNDER-PAR 70
Lim one-stroke back; four tied for fourth
Steve Kidron of Horsham, Pa., and Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay, Wis., are tied for the first-round lead at 1-under-par 70 at the Ashworth Junior at Cannon Ridge. Isaac Lim of Piscataway, N.J., is one-stroke behind at an even par 71.
The Ashworth Junior at Cannon Ridge is a 36-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Cannon Ridge Golf Club. The tournament features 96 of the nation’s premier junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 20 states and Canada.
The AJGA’s Ashworth Junior Series is designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.
Kidron played even most of the round, but was able to birdie two par-5 holes, Nos. 3 and 18. The 15-year-old was happy with his play and credited his first-round success to his putting.
“On the third hole, I got to the green in two with a 3-iron and two-putted for birdie,” Kidron said. “On No. 18, I was short of the green in two, chipped on and made the putt.”
The Ashworth Junior at Cannon Ridge is Kidron’s third AJGA event. In 2003, he played in the Ashworth Junior at Maryland as well as the Ashworth Junior at Hagerstown.
Schultz, who has been practicing in a dome so far this season due to the cold temperatures in Wisconsin, traveled hundreds of miles to play in his first AJGA tournament. The 13-year-old was thrilled with his play following a first round in which he missed only one fairway.
“I have never shot under par before. In fact I have never shot even,” Schultz said.
The 13-year-old carded three bogeys in a row on the front nine, but he came back to birdie Nos. 7, 10, 12 and 18. Schultz capped off this streak with a 97-yard shot to within two inches from the hole on No. 18 to birdie his final hole of the day.
Lim is one stroke off the lead in third place. He carded a 36 on the front and a 35 on the back to finish the first round at an even par 71. Lim pitched a shot in from the left rough 15-yards away on No. 14 for birdie. The 17-year-old hopes to hit the ball “straight and solid” tomorrow to win the tournament.
In a four-way tie for fourth place at 1-over-par 72 are John Buchanan IV of Fairfax, Va., Michael Strasburg of Oak Hill, Va., Timothy Courtney of Midlothian, Va., and Rob Chappell of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The final round of the Ashworth Junior at Cannon Ridge will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday morning.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA has a membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.
Titleist, the AJGA’s National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association’s success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, a supporter of the AJGA since 1983, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.
