TEN BOYS AND THREE GIRLS RECEIVE EXEMPTION TOWARD OPEN AJGA TOURNAMENTS
Sylvan takes Girls Division honors at 13-years-old

BRASELTON, Ga.— Thirteen-year-old Katie Sylvan of San Diego, shot 4-over-par 75 to take medalist honors in the Girls Division of the AJGA National Qualifier at Chateau Elan, Monday. In the Boys Division Clayton Boardman of Augusta, Ga., and Hunter Slatton of Tuscaloosa, Ala., tied for medalist honors at 1-over-par 72.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA National Qualifier at Chateau Elan was played on Chateau Elan Golf Club Chateau Course, Monday June 28. The field was comprised of 49 boys and 10 girls from 10 states including 30 from the state of Georgia. The low 10 boys and three girls earned one Tournament Exemption toward their Performance Based Entry Status. The top-third in each division earned a Performance Star.

With most of her round being steady, Sylvan had a great up-and-down on No. 7. After leaving the ball short with a tough hole location, she made a good chip to save par.

“I was keeping the ball in the fairways, which is very important on this course,” Sylvan said. “I missed only two fairways and hit most greens.”

Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division were Joy Kim of Lawrenceville, Ga. (40-36—76) and Molly Aronsson of Shelburne, Vt., (38-39—77).

In the Boys Division, Boardman had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, making him 2-under-par with only five holes remaining.

“I did not finish as strong as I would liked,” 16-year-old Boardman said. “The last five holes were tough for me today.”

Slatton, 15, played at even par most of the round, but was able to birdie No. 7. He was happy with his play and credited his success to his putting.

“I made a couple of important putts today to save a lot of pars.” Slatton said.

Rounding out the top-10 and earning a Tournament Exemption in the Boys Division are Bradly Johnson of Birmingham, Ga., and Alan Fowler of Gainesville, Ga., at 73; David Baker, Jr., of Alpharetta, Ga., Matthew Hammock of Hinesville, Ga., Gabriel Costa of Tequesta, Fla., Zachary Alred of Roswell, Ga., John Welden of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Young Cha of Wesley Chapel, Fla., at 74.
