WILLIAMS AND MULLIN SHARE MEDALIST HONORS

Fourteen others qualify for AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — Reed Williams of Columbus, Ohio, and Michael Mullin of Austin, Texas, fired even-par 72s to share medalist honors at the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior Qualifier, at the Boyne Highlands Resort – Moor Course.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the qualifier allowed 37 players to compete, with the low 16 boys earning exemptions into the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior at Boyne Highlands Resort – Moor Course to be held July 27-29.

Williams, 17, carded four birdies on his way to matching 36s on the front and back-nine.  He began his round fast, reaching the par-5 18th hole in two with a five-iron and making a birdie.  His other birdies came at Nos. 9, 14, and his finishing hole 17.  The qualifier was the first AJGA event Williams has competed in.

“I am very excited about winning my first AJGA event that I played in,” Williams said.  “I hit the ball well today, and I am looking forward to playing in this event.”

Mullin, who was paired with Williams, recorded six birdies on his round, shooting 35 on the front-nine and 37 on the back-nine.  He birdied No.1 and then had consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 7 and 8 on the front, and Nos. 14 and 15 on the back.

“I hit the ball well today which led to all of my birdies out there,” Mullin said.  “I lost a little concentration on some putts early in my round, but was able to overcome it and still put together a solid round.”

Finishing in a tie for third place was Andrew Mahnke of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Thomas Buran of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Andy Johnson of Lake Bluff, Ill. shot identical 1-over-par 73s.  Qualifying with a 76 was Tyler Bice of Elida, Ohio, and Andrew Frame of Manteno, Ill.  Frank Rogers of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Charles Bettendorf of St. Louis, Mo., shot a 77 to finish in a tie for eighth place.  Kelly Kretz of Antigo, Wis., Devin Fahl of Findlay, Ohio, Matthew Triplett of St. Charles, Ill., Peter Lucey of Winnetka, Ill., Michael Paciga of Darien, Ill., Chase Ferris of Flushing, Mich., and Peter Berlekamp of Sidney, Ohio also qualified for the event.

With rounds of 82, Adrian Singh of Maple, Ontario, Matt Evans of Noblesville, Ind., Drew Virkus of Scotts, Mich., Tom Christopher of Columbus, Ohio, Rob Chappell of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Daniel Green of Shelby, Ohio all qualified.  Michael Schott of Columbus, Ohio, won a one hole sudden-death playoff to capture the final spot of the tournament.

In lieu of playing in this weeks event, Mullin, Buran, Bice, Frame, Bettendorf, Kretz, and Lucey, choose to have one Tournament Exemption added to their AJGA Performance Based Entry status.

The first round of the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior will begin Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tee.
