THREE TIE FOR BOYS DIVISION MEDALIST HONORS AT JIMMY CLAY
Smith shoots 76 to lead Girls Division qualifiers
AUSTIN, Texas – Andrew Workman of The Woodlands, Texas; Michael Nesmith of Crockett, Texas; and Edward Woodruff, II, of San Antonio, each shot a 1-under-par 71 to tie for Boys Division medalist honors Sunday in the PING Harvey Penick Junior Qualifier. In the Girls Division, Raelyn Smith of Odessa, Texas, took medalist honors with a 4-over-par 76.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the PING Harvey Penick Junior Qualifier was held at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, Texas. The juniors were competing for 17 spots (14 boys, three girls) in the PING Harvey Penick Junior, which will feature 120 players from 11 states and two foreign countries, including 96 from Texas. The 54-hole event will be held at Austin Country Club and begins Tuesday.
Woodruff, who will play golf at St. Mary University next year, said course management was the key to his round, but he found it difficult on the greens.
“I was hitting a lot of greens and a lot of fairways,” Woodruff said. “I was knocking my putts close, they just weren’t falling.”
Workman and Nesmith were also satisfied with their rounds despite the difficult green conditions.
“I played well because of fairways and greens,” Nesmith said. “I had a rough time but I didn’t have to get up and down or hit any difficult shots.”
“It was tough to putt out there, but overall it was a pretty solid round,” Workman said.
Benjamin Tewes of Lincoln, Neb., and Scott Barrett of Plano, Texas, each shot 72, and Riley Pumphrey of Georgetown, Texas, Bryant Lach of The Woodlands, Chance Pipitone of Houston, and Jace Lewis of Lufkin, Texas, each carded 73s. Phillip Hui of San Antonio, Kyle Kelley of Houston, and Drew Allenspach of Sugarland, Texas, finished with 74s, and 10 players tied at 75.
In the Girls Division, Smith bounced back from a rough start to qualify for her first AJGA event.
“I didn’t make any putts, but I didn’t make any disasters,” Smith said. “It wasn’t all the greens, but the speed was hard to get down.
“This will be my first event, so I’m just going to go in and hopefully play decent.”
Rosalyn Kim of Belton, Texas, shot 78, and Meghan Gockel of Dallas, shot 79. Emily Kvinta of Yoakum, Texas, shot 81 and won in a playoff for the final Girls Division qualifying spot.
