SCHULTZ SHOOTS 6-UNDER AND RECEIVES MEDALIST HONORS

Yam receives medalist honors for the Girls Division

LAS VEGASDJ Schultz shot a 6-under-par 64 and claimed medalist honors Sunday, for the Boys Division at the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship Qualifier at Angel Park Golf Club.  Jessica Yam took top honors for the Girls Division with a 3-over-par 73.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship will feature 84 players from 11 states, including nine Nevada natives. The event is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Angel Park Golf Club-Mountain Course and will begin on Tuesday.

Schultz and Yam are choosing to opt out of this week’s tournament in favor of taking a Tournament Exemption.

Schultz, 15, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., couldn’t have been happier with his game today.  He shot a 30 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine with seven total birdies.

“I’m really excited about how I played today,” he said.  “This was my best round and I’m really happy.  I thought I’d do all right, but I wasn’t expecting to do this well.  I would have been happy being in the top ten.”

Chris Hirahatake of Irvine, Calif., John Wisner III of Tucson, Ariz., Evan Derian of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Charlie Harris of Fresno, Calif., Joe Greiner of Santa Clarita, Calif., Bio Kim of Tustin, Calif., M. Johnny Pinjuv of Las Vegas, Estanislao Guerrero of San Diego, John Yeun of Brea, Calif., Damian Yi of La Crescenta Calif., Peter Deltondo of Laguna Hills, Calif., John Wenger of Elk Grove, Calif., and Nick Poper of Lakewood, Calif., also qualified to round out the Boys Division for this week’s tournament.

Yam, 16, of San Diego, was proud to take home the Girls Division medalist honors for the qualifier round in her first AJGA event.

“My driver was working really well today,” she said.  “It was going straight and the two birdies I made helped to keep my score low.  My plan was to keep focused, taking it one shot at a time.”

Rounding out the Girls Division tournament field are Justina Yu of Las Vegas, Alexandra Gibson of Henderson, Nev., Mandi Incorvaia of Las Vegas, and Ashley Childers of Sun City, Calif.

First-round tee times will run from 7-9 a.m., Tuesday at Angel Park Golf Club.
