TEXANS STEAL SHOW AND COMPLETE FIELD FOR AJGA LUBBOCK JUNIOR

Native Texans win medalist honors

LUBBOCK, Texas- With scores of 1-under par 71s, local Texans David Holguin, Geoff Howard and Tyler Sheppard walked away with medalist honors for the Boys Division at the AJGA Lubbock Junior presented by United Supermarkets and Market Street. Sara Gawick, also from Texas, took home top honors for the Girls Division with a 3-over-par 75.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Lubbock Junior will feature 99 players from eight states, including 72 Texas natives. The event, which is being played for the first time, is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is held at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University. The first round will begin on Tuesday.

Holguin, 16, of San Antonio, Texas, started the day on the wrong foot by hitting his ball out of bounds on the first hole, resulting in a double bogey. He turned it around by making birdies on two of the next three holes, finishing with six total birdies.

“The funny thing is I started with a double and ended with a double, but somewhere in the middle, I found my game,” Holguin said.

Also from San Antonio, Howard, 17, made birdies on the first and last two holes. He said the 6,762 yard course “played into my hands.”

“I was hitting really well,” Howard said. “I knew that if I went out and played my own game, I’d qualify.”

Both Holguin and Howard will not play in Tuesday’s tournament and will instead utilize the AJGA’s new qualifier opt-out policy. This allows a player to opt out of playing in a tournament they qualify for in exchange for a Tournament Exemption.

Clad in a brightly colored rainbow shirt, 15-year-old Sheppard said he was very excited to qualify for his first AJGA tournament.

“I’m actually very surprised,” he said. “There’s a lot of kids older than me here.”

The other qualifiers that will join Sheppard in the Boys Division are Justin Dubose, of Austin, Texas, Kyle Finkler, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Brett Tritton, of Carrollton, Texas, Tate Nichols, of Farwell, Texas, Derek Meyer, of Lake Charles, La., Scott Roudebush, of Austin, Texas, Jeff Joy, of Weatherford, Texas, Wade Warren, of Weatherford, Texas, Eric Barnett, of Leander, Texas, Russell Brown, of Lubbock, Texas, Alex Zannes, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Bryan Hymer, of Lubbock, Texas.

Gawick, 16, of Sugar Land, Texas, started off with bogeys but later sank two 50-foot putts for birdie on the front nine.

“Then I went on a par streak for the remainder of the round,” she said.

Joining Gawick on Tuesday is Whitney Osborne, 16, of Amarillo, Texas, who shot a 4-over-par 76.
