Media Award: ANNIKA Invitational wins for second time

For the second time since the inaugural event in 2009, the American Junior Golf Association honored the ANNIKA Invitational with the 2013 Media Award. The fifth annual tournament, which was held at Reunion Resort in Reunion, Fla., Jan. 18-21, was recognized for outstanding media participation and coverage before, during and after the event across a variety of platforms.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am fundraising tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Awards will be presented at the J.R. “Digger” Smith Awards Banquet in Braselton, Ga., on March 8.

"We are honored to once again receive the Media Award from the AJGA," Annika said.  “We take great pride in promoting our tournament as much as possible through social media and also appreciate the help from
GolfWeek,Global Golf Post and the Golf Channel in spreading the word that our tournaments are more than golf.”

The tournament officially opened with a press conference featuring Annika, 2013 Player Representative Nicole Morales, 2012 ANNIKA Invitational Europe champion Linnea Strom and, in his first appearance as President of the AJGA Board, Jim Nugent. Representatives from
Golfweek, the Orlando Sentinel and the Back9network attended the press conference and were on-site throughout the week providing post-round recaps and local storylines.

Each year the Golf Channel expands its coverage of the ANNIKA Invitational, and the 2013 event welcomed “Morning Drive” host Damon Hack and producer Jeff Neubarth who participated in the Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament. Golf Channel returned for the final round, capturing footage of Annika greeting players coming off No. 18, the awards ceremony and an interview with Annika and champion Bethany Wu.

Using the hashtag #AJGAAnnika, the ANNIKA Invitational experienced tremendous social media interaction, making 1,339,721 impressions on Twitter and reaching 129,170 accounts.

Since receiving the Newcomer of the Year Award in its first year, the tournament was named the Invitational of the Year for the 2010 season and was the Media Award recipient in 2011.

The tournament continued its legacy in 2014, as the sixth annual ANNIKA Invitational returned to Reunion Resort, Jan. 17-20.
