Michael Johnson of Birmingham, Ala., was the final
player to be added to The Junior PLAYERS Championship field over Labor Day
weekend. Following an impressive 54 holes of golf, Johnson captured his first
Invitational victory by one stroke and earned a sponsor’s exemption into the
inaugural Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters.
The 17-year-old will play alongside the future stars
of the of the PGA TOUR, Oct. 21-24, on Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in
the final full-field Nationwide Tour event this year.
Ranked No. 7 in the Polo Golf Rankings, Johnson also
won the AJGA’s 2010 Deutsche Bank Partners for Charity Junior Shoot Out in July
and placed inside the top 10 at five of the six events in which he competed
this season. In all, he has posted six top-10 finishes during the four years he
has played in AJGA events and has verbally committed to play at Auburn next
year.
He will be competing against some of the Nationwide
Tour’s best players. The current top 60 on the money list and 95 of the top 100
players have committed to play in the event. Other players accepting sponsor’s
invitations to compete include AJGA alumni Jason Gore, Len Mattiace and Sam
Saunders.
