2010 Canon Cup Teams Named

From left to right: Victoria Tanco, Oliver Schniederjans, Tanner Kesterson and Rachel Morris will try to help their teams to victory at the 2010 Canon Cup.

The teams have been set for the 21st annual East-versus-West battle. Each squad for the 2010 Canon Cup will consist of 10 boys and 10 girls from their respective side of the Mississippi River, ready to face off at Old Sandwich Golf Club in Plymouth, Mass., July 26-29.

The West leads the series at 11-8-1 and, after five straight victories, looks to continue its winning streak with five veterans returning to the team. Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Calif., Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., Tiffany Lim of San Jose, Calif., and Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., have all brought home a Canon Cup title. Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., winner of the 2010 Rolex Tournament of Champions, has amassed a record of 7-5-0 in three previous Canon Cup competitions.

Tanner Kesterson of Plano, Texas, will start as the highest-ranked West player for the boys. Kesterson recently earned a victory at the FootJoy Invitational. A 2009 Rolex Junior All-American, Kesterson has six additional top-10 finishes, including a tie for seventh at the 2010 Rolex Tournament of Champions. This will be his first Canon Cup appearance.

The girls top-ranked player is two-time Canon Cup selection, Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif. Morris was a member of the 2008 and 2009 winning teams and has a career record of 4-3-1 at the event. A four-time Rolex Junior All-American and two-time HP Scholastic Junior All-American, Morris has an impressive resume that includes seven AJGA victories. Morris has already earned three top-five finishes in 2010 and will attend the University of Southern California in the fall.

After being defeated in the last boys match on the 18th hole last year, the East will attempt to bounce back in 2010 and end the West’s recent string of wins. Nine Rolex Junior All-Americans look to help the team to victory.

With all new faces on the boys’ side, Oliver Schniederjans of Powder Springs, Ga., will lead the group as the highest ranked boy, sitting at No. 4 in the Polo Golf Rankings. Champion of the 2009 Polo Golf Junior Classic, Schniederjans is a second-team Rolex Junior All-American. His 2010 accomplishments include a tie for fifth at the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods and a tie for 11th at the Thunderbird International Junior.

The girls of the East will bring experience to the competition.  Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., and Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., all have one Canon Cup under their belt.

Tanco will headline the girls’ side ranked No. 2 in the Polo Golf Rankings. Tanco went 4-0-0 in the 2008 Canon Cup and holds five AJGA titles, including a win at the ANNIKA Invitational in January.  In all, Tanco has racked up 20 top-10 finishes in national junior golf competition.

The three-day event will feature team match play competition with matches that include four-ball, mixed-four-ball, foursomes, mixed-foursomes and singles. Visit ajga.org during the tournament to follow the action from one of the AJGA’s most unique and spirited competitions.
