AJGA Players Qualify for U.S. Women's Amateur

Forty-four of the top female junior golfers teed up in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship Monday with 20 players reaching match play.


Alexis Thompson

Victoria Tanco of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lindy Duncan of Davie, Fla., both lead the way for the AJGA juniors reaching match play. Both finished tied for sixth with a match play qualifying score of 143. Match play will begin Wednesday morning at 9:30 PT.

Other juniors who advanced to match play include Dottie Ardina of Bradenton, Fla., Sydney Burlison of Salinas, Calif., Pearl Jin of Bradenton, Fla., Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu, Nikki Koller of Lewisburg, Ky., Stephanie Kono of Honolulu, Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, Michelle Shin of Cape Coral, Fla., Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio, Kristina Wong of Bradenton, Fla., and Julie Yang of Phoenix.

U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., also advanced to match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., who was the 2007 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion, also advanced to match play.

Those who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, but did not advance to match play include Ashley Albrecht of Murrieta Valley, Calif., Maria Castellanos of Stuart, Fla., Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., Chelsey Cothran of Springdale, Ark., Kaitlin Drolson of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Austin Ernst of Seneca, S.C., Victoria Fallgren of Lakewood, Calif., Anna Keith of Moultrie, Ga., Casey Ann Kennedy of Venice, Fla., Marika Lendl of Bradenton, Fla., Amelia Lewis of Jacksonville, Fla., Ashley McKenney of Scottsdale, Ariz., Haley Millsap of Pace, Fla., Megan Pak of Bradenton, Fla., Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y., Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., Milena Savich of Carmel, Ind., Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., Lindsey Solberg of Verona, Wis., Tessa The of Los Altos, Calif., Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Stephanie Wagstaff of Asheville, N.C., and Haley Wilson of Ft. Mitchell, Ala.

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, who became the youngest U.S. Women’s Amateur champion in 2006 at 14 years old, also qualified for this year’s event, however, missed qualifying for match play by one shot.

ACE

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
