Course Spotlight: The Traditions Club at Texas A & M

In the 24-year history of an AJGA Easter Texas event, this year marks the first year the Traditions Club at Texas A&M will host the event. The AJGA Championship at Traditions is slated for Easter Weekend, March 20-23. The Traditions Club at Texas A&M will welcome a field of 138 junior golfers to take on its Jack Nicklaus-designed course.

The Traditions Club at Texas A&M opened in 2004 and features a 900-acre refuge for golf enthusiasts in Bryan, Texas. The course is 7,146-yards of challenge and excitement for golfers old and young. In addition to the golf course, the grounds will soon feature a 25,000-square foot clubhouse equipped with players’ facilities, dining and meeting options, an aquatics center and a pro shop.

The grounds are also home to the Texas A&M men’s and women’s golf teams. The Aggie golfers have their own home on the grounds which includes coaches offices, study areas, double-sided driving ranges, three putting greens, four covered hitting bays and two indoor bays equipped with swing analysis equipment.

The course, located roughly 100 miles from both Austin and Houston, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus, Jr. Father and son incorporated a variety of hardwoods, natural creeks and wetlands on the course. Many holes feature a picturesque view of the university skyline.

For those golfers traveling to the event from colder regions, they will be happy to know that the average temperature in March is in the 60s. Bryan typically sees an average of just under three inches of rain in March according to the National Weather Service.

Prior to moving to The Traditions Club at Texas A&M, the event took place at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center in The Woodlands, Texas. Last year’s champions were 17-year-old Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., and 18-year-old Sang Yi of Carrollton, Texas. Rah is currently ranked No. 5 in the Polo Golf Rankings and Yi is ranked No. 15. Yi will continue his golf career next fall at Louisiana State University.

Past champions of this event include current PGA and LPGA Tour players Bob May (1985), Lucas Glover (1997), and Morgan Pressel (2004). Other golf standouts who participated in this event include Cristie Kerr, Grace Park, Tiger Woods and Justin Leonard.
