Bauchou, Tsukiyama Lead Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier 

Storms interrupt play, cause tournament to shorten to 36 holes

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Mother Nature is not cooperating at the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier, stalling Saturday's first round with only half of the field complete. Play resumed Sunday morning and the round was completed shortly after noon. As a result of the lost time and a gloomy forecast, the event is being shortened to 36 holes.

Leading the pack after the completion of the first round were Zachary Bauchou of Forest, Va., in the Boys Division, and Kuriko Tsukiyama of West New York, N.J., in the Girls Division.

The Woodward Video Junior at the Greenbrier was originally a 54-hole stroke play event before being shortened to 36 holes, and is being conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Greenbrier-The Meadows Course in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. The tournament field consists of 132 players from 26 states, Venezuela and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-70 course at 6,669 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,928 yards.

Firing a 3-under-par 67 Saturday morning, Bauchou attributed his success to hitting his irons consistently throughout the day. He carded one eagle, four birdies, and 10 pars in the first round.

“It's an advantage and there's definitely going to be some pressure going into tomorrow,” Bauchou said. “But that's what golf is, you just have to play your own game.”

Colin Proctor of Anderson, Ind., is one stroke back at 2-under-par 68, while four players lurk at 1-under-par 69. The Boys Division will play their final 18 holes in a shotgun format, beginning Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

The entire Girls Division returned to complete their first round Sunday morning and Tsukiyama shot a 1-under-par 69 to lead the field. Tsukiyama made five birdies in her round to claim a one-shot lead over Jordan Ferreira of University Place, Wash., who stands at even-par 70. Sara Detlefsen of Eagan, Minn., is in third place at 1-over-par 71.

The Girls Division is slated to complete their 36 holes in a Monday morning shotgun.
