Brauburger leads heading into the second round of the Lockton Kansas City Junior
Bellville leads close Girls Division race at Oakwood Country Club
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brik Brauburger of Bella Vista, Ark., leads the Boys Division after shooting a solid first round 4-under-par 68. In the Girls Division, Kari Bellville of Granger, Ind., leads with a 2-over-par 74.
The Lockton Kansas City Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City, Mo. The tournament field includes 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 20 states, Colombia, Mexico, China, and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,528 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 6,082 yards.
Brauburger, a member of the class of 2012, is participating in just his fifth career AJGA tournament. Entering the round, Brauburger had never played the course before and focused on keeping his play simple in order to succeed.
“I hit my driver well and hit a lot of fairways, and didn't get myself in a lot of trouble, which helped my round,” said Brauburger about his leading round.
Jared Carver of Weston, Fla., Will McDonald of Sapulpa, Okla., Chase Hanna of Leawood, Kan., and Trenton Olson of Horace, N.D. sit in a four way tie for second place after posting rounds of 2-under-par 70.
In the Girls Division, Bellville's 2-over-par 74 has her holding a slim one shot lead going into Wednesday's second round. Bellville, who is competing in her fifth AJGA event of the season, had a round highlighted by four birdies. Consistent putting drove Bellville's round and she hopes to continue to execute that part of her game through the rest of tournament.
“The game plan is try to play the course the best that I can and not worry about anything else,” said Bellville.
Cassie Wang of Lenexa, Kan., Anne Willman of Prairie Village, Kan., and Jordan Lippetz of Bradenton, Fla., are tied for second place after all posting scores of 3-over-par 75.
