Carreon Maintains Lead at Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Pepsi
Quinton snatches top spot in Girls Division to lead second round at The Club at Sonterra—South Course

SAN ANTONIO — Andrew Carreon of San Antonio shot his second straight 2-under-par 69 at the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Pepsi to stay atop the leaderboard with a two-day total of 138. Kayli Quinton of Cypress, Texas carded a 1-under par 70 to take the lead with a two-day total 3-over par 144.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Pepsi is a 54-hole stroke play event held at The Club at Sonterra—South Course in San Antonio. The 120-player field features junior golfers from 6 states, Colombia and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,640 yards while the Girls Division is playing from 5,923 yards.

Coming into the round already atop the leaderboard, Carreon did not ease up as he carded three birdies on the front nine. Carreon plans to keep up the consistent play heading into tomorrow's final round.

“If you play aggressive you can have a good round but you can also get into trouble,” Carreon said. “It worked well for me today, though, and that is going to be my game plan coming into tomorrow as well.”

Carreon closed out his round holding a two-stroke lead over Benjamin Carrier of McKinney, Texas, who is in second place at 2-under-par 140 tournament total. Tied for third place are Kolton Crawford of Mansfield, Texas and Chris Contreras of San Antonio with even-par 142. Rounding out the Boys Division leaderboard at a 1-over-par 143 is Dylan McClure of Argyle, Texas.

Despite shooting a double-bogey on No. 1, Quinton managed to calm her nerves and turn around to finish the round with an eagle on No. 17.

“I guess I had first hole jitters, but I knew I could come back from it,” Quinton said. “On my eagle hole, I hit a great drive, and then decided to go with the 3-wood. I got to a 50-yard chip to the flag, and it just went in.”

Mariana Sims of Austin, Texas, Anne Cheng of Torrance, Calif., and Marijosse Navarro of San Antonio are all tied in second place at a 6-over-par 147.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

Final-round tee times will start at 7:30 a.m. off No. 1 tee. For more information about the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout Presented by Pepsi, please contact tournament headquarters at (678) 571-7994.
