Kennerly Earns Exemption into PGA TOUR's Wyndham Championship
FJ Invitational tournament record tied
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Holding on to his three-day lead, Billy Kennerly of Alpharetta, Ga., won the FJ Invitational and claimed his first AJGA victory at Sedgefield Country Club. Kennerly's 11-under-par 269 tournament total tied the 72-hole FJ Invitational tournament record.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the FJ Invitational was a 72-hole stroke play event at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The 99-player field featured golfers from 23 states and 10 foreign countries. Home of the PGA TOUR's Wyndham Championship, the par-70 course played at 7,116 yards.
Sitting atop the leaderboard all four rounds of play, Kennerly's victory earned him a Sponsor's Exemption into the PGA TOUR's Wyndham Championship this August.
“I played really good today as well as all week,” Kennerly said. “Leading all four days doesn't happen very often and that's really a cool achievement to have.”
Kennerly's win made history as he now shares the FJ Invitational tournament record with Andrew Yun, who carded an 11-under-par 277 at Forest Oaks Country Club in 2006. His 269 total is also the second-lowest 72-hole total in AJGA history (268 — Matthew Rosenfeld, 2001 HP Boys Championship).
“There have been a lot of great players that have won this tournament and gone on to do really good things,” Kennerly said. “Hopefully I can follow in their footsteps.”
Kennerly is currently ranked No. 19 in the Polo Golf Rankings and has signed a National Letter of Intent with Clemson.
Four strokes behind in second place, Cody Proveaux of Leesville, S.C., carded a tournament total 7-under-par 273. Connor Black of Katy, Texas, finished third at 4-under-par 276, while Robby Shelton, IV of Wilmer, Ala., and Chad Cox of Charlotte, N.C., tied for fourth at 3-under-par 277.
