GULLBERG EDGES OUT COMPETITION AT AJGA NORTHEAST OPEN Ką˛ QUALIFIER
Morales walks away with Medalist Honors in Girls Division at Richter Park Golf Course
DANBURY, Conn. — John Gullberg, 17, of Franksville, Wis., won Medalist Honors after shooting a 2-under-par 70 Sunday at the Ką˛ Qualifier for the AJGA Northeast Open. Nicole Morales, 13, of South Salem, N.Y., was the Medalist in the Girls Division taking top honors by three strokes.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Ką˛ Qualifier for the AJGA Northeast Open was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury, Conn. The field featured 84 boys and 15 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states, Colombia and Canada. The par-72 course was played at 6,607 yards for the Boys Division and 5,994 yards for the Girls Division. Ką˛ Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to "play their way in" to coinciding AJGA Open tournaments or earn a Tournament Exemption or Performance Star for a future event. In all, 12 boys and 2 girls advanced from the Ką˛ Qualifier and have the opportunity to play in the AJGA Northeast Open, which begins Tuesday, August 18. The Ką˛ Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.
Gullberg played a solid round making par or better on every hole, except his last hole No. 4 to take top honors by one stroke. Gullberg was able to make two good par putts back-to-back on Nos. 10, from 10 feet and 11, from eight feet. Gullberg will play in the AJGA Northeast Open which starts on Tuesday.
“My goal going into the tournament is to just keep hitting the ball solid,” Gullberg said. “I just want to enjoy playing the game of golf.”
Joining Gullberg and playing in the tournament are Nicholas Pandelena of Atkinson, N.H., Christian Dolan of Islip, N.Y., Jesse Zorfas of Newton, Mass., Keith Schuman of Upper Saddle River, N.J., Westen Koorbusch of Darien, Conn., Michael Troy of Stamford, Conn., Xander McDonald-Smith of Rockaway Park, N.Y., Robert Gelber of Scarsdale, N.Y., Chris Wiatr of Woodbury, Conn., Derrick Kim of Congers, N.Y.., and Brendan Lemp of West Hartfod, Conn..
Choosing to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption were Colin McDade of Rye, N.Y., and Peter Kim of Metuchen N.J.
Morales, the youngest competitor in K12 Qualifier, started off hot making consecutive birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18. Making several up and downs, Morales used her consistent play to help pave the way to a three stroke victory.
“I had made several bogies in a row and then I made a good up and down on No.10,” Morales said. “That helped me stop three putting and kept me more consistent than earlier in my round.”
Morales and Alison Eleey of Quincy, Mass., each chose to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
Daniela Ordonez of Bogota, Colombia, and Jane Dong of Fremont, Calif., both qualified to play in this week's tournament.
