CHAN TAKES THE EARLY LEAD AT THE AJGA JUNIOR AT WENATCHEE
Moon lights up Girls Division at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — Lorens Chan of Honolulu took the Boys Division lead, shooting 5-under-par 67 at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club. Seo Hee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash., took a one stroke lead in the Girls Division at the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee, shooting 2-under-par 70.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club. The tournament field features 71 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from 12 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course from 6,363 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,980 yards.

Chan entered the first round of the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee with both guns firing. The rising sophomore went eagle, birdie on his first two holes, which set up the rest of his round. Chan then went out to record five more birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 12, 13 and 15 to finish the round at 5-under-par 67.

“The course was tough,” Chan said. “The greens are small and you have to be able to put the ball in the right place or else you'll find yourself missing one foot putts.”

Erik Jarvey of Auburn, Wash., sits one stroke behind Chan after shooting 4-under-par 68. In third is Daniel Snoey of Camas, Wash., who shot 3-under-par 69. Niall Platt of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Sang Gyun Lee of Calgary, Alberta, sit tied for fourth, after each shot 2-under-par 70.

Moon had an up and down day, as she hit less then half of the greens, but her strong short game saved her and she recorded five birdies on Nos. 1, 7, 9, 14 and 15. The rising senior finished the round at 2-under-par 70 to take the lead for the Girls Division.

“My chipping was really good today.” Moon said. “I didn't even hit half the greens, but I was able to save a lot of pars.”

Briana Mao of Folsom, Calif., sits in second after shooting 1-under-par 71. Rounding out the top three for the Girls Division is Morgan Thompson of Tualatin, Ore., who shot 2-over-par 74.
