TAYLOR TAKES LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND AT SPRING CREEK GOLF CLUB
GORDONSVILLE, Va. — Moving up one spot to lead the Boys Division after Tuesday's second round is Julian Taylor of Greenville, S.C., carding a 1-under-par 71 to lead by one stroke. Paveenuch Sritragul of Bangkok, Thailand, leads the Girls Division after shooting a 2-over-par 74.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Spring Creek is a 54-hole stroke-play event with a 36-hole cut held at Spring Creek Golf Club. The field is made up of 97 boys and 32 girls, ages 12-15, from 23 states, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, and the Philippines. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,675 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,796 yards.
After a 2-under-par 34 on his first-nine, Taylor eagled his 10th hole to move him further under par.
“I made that eagle after I hit my 9-iron past the hole and it spun back in,” Taylor said. “I hit a lot of greens and hit my irons well but I need to be more consistent on the tee.”
In a three-way tie for second are Meechai Padungsiriseth of Bradenton, Fla., Hank Lebioda of Winter Springs, Fla., and Stanhope Johnson Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., at 2-under-par 142. In a four-way tie for fifth are Kyle Kochevar of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Jonathan DiIanni of Kernersville, N.C., Sean Elliott of Westfield, N.J., and Trevor Times of Williamsburg, Va., who sit two strokes off the lead at even-par 144.
Sritragul bogeyed her first hole but was able to card three more birdies during her round and sits at 2-under-par 142 for the tournament.
“I was hitting shots in close to the pins but my putting wasn't that good,” Sritragul said. “I need to improve my driving accuracy but tomorrow I just want to play the best I can.”
In second for the Girls Division is Irina Paulin Gabasa of Cebu, Philippines, who carded an even-par 72 in her second round for a total of 4-over-par 148. Rounding out the Girls Division in third is Jacqueline Shelly of Fernandina Beach, Fla., who posted a
5-over-par 149 total.
