WEAVER SURGES AHEAD OF FIELD TO CAPTURE TRADER JOE'S JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTED BY PAT HURST
Baraquiel holds on to take Girls Division title at Castlewood Country Club

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif., had his eye on the prize the whole week and during Thursday's final round, he took advantage of every opportunity to make sure he walked away champion of the Trader Joe's Junior Championship hosted by Pat Hurst. In the Girls Division, Sunshine Baraquiel of Chatsworth, Calif., held on to her lead and claimed her third AJGA title by posting a tournament total of 6-over-par 216.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Trader Joe's Junior Championship hosted by Pat Hurst was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Castlewood Country Club — Hill Course. The 99 player field featured players from seven states, Chile, Thailand, Argentina, New Zealand and Philippines. The Boys Division played the par-70 course at 6,215 yards, while the Girls Division played the William Bell layout at 5,659 yards.

Weaver, a UC Berkeley signee, closed out his last AJGA Open event by shooting a final-round 6-under-par 64, good enough for a tournament total of 7-under-par 203, two strokes ahead of the field. Weaver credited solid all-around play to better focus and putting all of the pieces together.

“Everything worked today,” Weaver said. “I hit fourteen greens and only had 27 putts. When you do that, it makes it so much easier. I set myself up for a lot of putts inside 10 feet and was able to capitalize.”

Weaver started off his round birdie, eagle and carried the momentum from there, carding four more birdies en route to his second AJGA victory.

Solid final-round scores put Alexander Franklin, of San Rafael, Calif., Shotaro Ban of San Jose, Calif., and Yi Keun Chang of Walnut, Calif., in a three-way tie for second place at 5-under-par 205. Matthew Negri of El Cajon, Calif., finished the tournament in fifth place at 4-under-par 206.

Baraquiel kept pace through the final round with her conservative play, carding a 1-over-par 71 to win by four strokes.

“My back nine was solid,” Baraquiel said. “After I had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, my confidence was boosted and I was able to relax.”

Prima Thammaraks of Bangkok, Thailand, and Paige Lee of Folsom, Calif., both moved up the leaderboard and tied for second place by posting final-round scores of 1-under-par 69 and even-par 70, respectively, with tournament totals of 10-over-par 220s.
