SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Anthony Kim of Cerritos, Calif., Robin Jang of Los Angeles, and Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., all sit in first in the Boys Division at the West Junior Open, each shot 4-under-par 68. Joyce Kim of Carlsbad, Calif., sits in first in the Girls Division, after shooting even-par 72 on the Valley Course of Robinson Ranch Golf Club.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the West Junior Open is a 54-hole stroke play event being held on the Valley Course at Robinson Ranch Golf Club. The tournament field features 72 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from 6 states, Argentina and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,864 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 6,137 yards.

Anthony started the round slow with a bogey on No. 1. He then rebounded with a birdie on No. 2. and went on to record an eagle on the 539 yard, par-5 No. 4.

“I didn’t expect it at all.” Anthony said. “I actually thought it was going to be a bad round when I three putted No. 1.”

Jang began his round with a birdie on No. 1 and carried the momentum the rest of the day. The rising junior recorded four birdies against one bogey on the front nine, finishing the front at 3-under-par 33. After recording another birdie on No. 10, Jang finished the round at 4-under-par 68.

“My birdie on No. 1 really boosted my confidence,” Jang said. “I hit a bad tee shot, but was able to recover with a good shot from the bunker.”

Kang played a nearly flawless round, recording five birdies against one bogey to finish the round at 4-under-par 68. He started strong with a birdie on No. 1, which he said was better then expected.

“I hit a lot of good tee shots,” Kang said. “I was able to put myself in a good position for birdies.”

Andrew Cho of La Crescenta, Calif., J.J. Holen of Castaic, Calif., and Alexander Forss of Temecula, Calif., are all tied for fourth, each shot 2-under-par 70.

In the Girls Division, Joyce’s ball striking was nearly flawless. The rising junior hit seven greens and all seven fairways on the back nine today, all of which contributed to her shooting an even-par 72.

“My driver helped me to maintain my confidence.” Joyce said.

Jessica Vasilic of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and Veronica Valerio of Temecula, Calif., both sit in a tie for second, each shot 1-over-par 73.
