PRATT POLISHES OFF WIN AT STEELWOOD WITH
FINAL-ROUND 1-OVER-PAR 73

Agnello nabs first AJGA victory in sudden-death playoff

LOXLEY, Ala. — Conner Pratt of Birmingham, Ala., posted a final-round 1-over-par 73 for a four-shot victory at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T. Nicole Agnello of Longwood, Fla., completed her wire-to-wire win Thursday after winning on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T was a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Steelwood Country Club. The tournament field consisted of 60 boys and 17 girls, ages 14 to 18, from nine states and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 layout at 7,004 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 6,052 yards.

Pratt carded his first over-par round of the tournament, but his five birdies and 8-under-par 208 total were enough to hold off his pursuers for his first AJGA win. His five birdies Thursday brought his total to 17 for the tournament.

“This is a great place to win; the course is in great shape,” Pratt said. “I didn't think it could get better than back-to-back state championships, but winning an individual event is great.”

Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, La., finished in second place with 4-under-par 212. Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., and Chad Bounds of Meridian, Miss., finished tied for third at 3-under-par 213. Chad Ramey of Fulton, Miss., finished in fifth place after posting the tournament's only other sub-par total at 2-under-par 214.

In her last AJGA event, Agnello fired a final-round, 7-over-par 79, but the four-shot lead she had built in the first two rounds was enough to put her in a playoff with A.J. Newell of Tampa, Fla. Both players were tied at 8-over-par 224 for the tournament. Agnello, who will attend the University of Virginia in the fall, parred the par-4, 11th hole to clinch her first AJGA victory.

“Winning is a dream come true,” Agnello said. “I went in feeling good and I was just hoping to play well. My goal at the beginning of the year was to win one before I graduated.”

Following Agnello and Newell and rounding out the top three for the Girls Division was Sandra Lee of Carrollton, Texas. She carded a 7-over-par 79 in her final round for a 12-over-par 228 total.
