BEAU HOSSLER, ASHLAN RAMSEY CLAIM VICTORIES AT CHATEAU ELAN
Juniors earn first AJGA titles at Chateau Elan Junior All-Star presented by Fellowship of Christian Athletes

BRASELTON, Ga. — Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Ashlan Ramsey of Augusta, Ga., each came from behind Sunday to win their first AJGA titles at the Chateau Elan Junior All-Star presented by Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Chateau Elan Junior All-Star presented by Fellowship of Christian Athletes featured 90 boys and 42 girls, ages 12-18, from 26 states and Canada, Chile and Colombia. The 54-hole stroke play event was staged on the par-71 Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Resort. The Boys Division played the course at 6,607 yards while the Girls Division played at 5,826 yards.

The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series is a collection of 10 events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15 and presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into Open tournaments. The series concludes with the Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.

Hossler, 14, won the Boys Division by shooting a final-round, 2-under-par 69 to come from four strokes back. Playing two groups ahead of the leader group, Hossler posted a total of 1-over-par 214 and waited anxiously as the final group completed play. When the scores became official, Hossler was informed that he had won the tournament.

“My heart is thumping right now, because I've been struggling a lot lately,” he said. “I've been working hard with my coach and won in a playoff at the L.A. City Championship last week.”

Knowing the weather in Georgia may be a factor, Hossler has also been preparing for Chateau Elan the last few weeks.

“I've been working hard on hitting the ball low, because I knew it would be windy here and in Texas next week,” he said, referring to his next event at the AJGA Junior All-Star at Kingwood.

With five birdies on the day, Hossler eventually caught the leaders with two in a row at 16 and 17.

“I chipped in for birdie on 16 from 20 yards,” he said. “I tried to clamp down on a lob wedge and skip it up the hill to make par, but the ball went in. I started getting the jitters when I birdied 17. I told myself, ‘Stop thinking about the score and just play.'”

Finishing second by one stroke was Aaron George of Dahlonega, Ga., at 2-over-par 215. In third place was Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village, Colo., who fired the low final-round score of 3-under-par 68 to finish the event at 3-over-par 216. Second-round leader Stanhope Johnson Jr., of Greensboro, N.C., finished fourth at 4-over-par 217.

In the Girls Division, Ashlan Ramsey, 13, endured a see-saw battle with her older sister Taylor throughout the final round. Two shots behind at the start of the day, Ashlan caught a share of the lead at the fourth hole, then lost it with a bogey on the fifth, and gained a one-stroke lead by playing the next three holes at 1-under-par.

Taylor caught a share of the lead again when Ashlan bogeyed the 14th, but Ashlan retook the outright lead when Taylor bogeyed 15 and the sisters matched each other par for par the rest of the way in.

“I'm happy,” Ashlan said with mixed emotions after her final-round 74 secured the win at 8-over-par 221. “But then I'm kind of sad because my sister lost.”

Ashlan has played in only one other event since last August — the AJGA's ANNIKA Invitational — and she has spent much of her time practicing and re-tooling her swing. With her swing in good condition now, she was ready to win her first AJGA title.

Taylor was runner-up after shooting 77 for a 9-over-par 222 total. In third place was McKenzie Talbert of Edgefield, S.C., at 225.
