Lee surges into lead for the Girls Division at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Jonny Baxter of Pleasanton, Calif., tallied four birdies en route to a 1-under-par 71 second round score in the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee. Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., shot a 2-over-par 74 to steal the lead in the Girls Division with a two-day total of 4-over-par 148 at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee is a 54-hole stroke-play competition being held at the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club. The tournament field consists of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 12 states, Canada, South Africa, Taiwan, and New Zealand. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,383 yards while the Girls Division is playing it at 5,985 yards.

Baxter, 17, finished his second round with a 4-under-par 140 two day total, enough to put him two strokes ahead of the competition. The highlight of Baxter's round came on the par-3 No. 14 when he hit a 5-iron to 20 feet and putted in for birdie.

“I'm really starting to play more solid,” Baxter said. “I'm hitting my irons really well and making up ground on the par-5s. I'm just going to prepare for tomorrow by practicing my putting and hopefully I'll produce another solid round.”

Chien Yao Hung of Sinjhuang City, Taiwan, and Charlie Hughes of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, are tied for second after carding 2-under-par 142s. Gerrit Chambers of Brush Prairie, Wash., is in fourth with 1-under-par 143, while Taeksoo Kim of Wailuku, Hawaii, and Gregory Fehrman of Rothschild, Wis., sit in fifth at even-par 144.

Lee, who is currently ranked eighth in the most recent Polo Golf Ranking, now leads the Girls Division by three strokes going into the final round. She recorded two birdies on the day including one on the par-3 No. 2.

“I hit my 8-iron and flew the green over the flagstick,” Lee said. “From there I had a 30-foot downhill putt and ended up sinking it for a great birdie.”

Lee plans on going into the final round in safety mode, taking birdie opportunities when they arise.

“I'm just going to stick to my game of being patient and safe,” said the 15-year-old. “If there's a good chance for birdie, then I'll take it.”

Behind Lee, in a two-way tie for second are Chessey Thomas of Spokane, Wash., and Tiffany Lim of San Jose, Calif., each having recorded a two-day total of 7-over-par 151.
