THREE TEXANS TIED AT 4-UNDER-PAR 68 TO LEAD AJGA NEW MEXICO OPEN
Yang cards 2-under-par 70 to lead Girls Division at Sandia Golf Club

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — James Sullivan of Katy, Texas, Brenden Redfern of Austin, Texas, and Johnathan Schnitzer of Houston, sit atop the leaderboard in the Boys Division of the AJGA New Mexico Open after rounds of 4-under-par 68. Michelle Yang of Los Angeles has a two-stroke lead in the Girls Division after her first-round 70.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA New Mexico Open is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Sandia Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 99 players, 75 boys and 24 girls from 19 states and Mexico. The Boys Division is being played at 7,291 yards and the Girls Division at 6,184 yards.

Sullivan opened his round on the front-nine with a 5-under-par 31. Sparked by five birdies, he gave himself the opportunity to go low early on.

“I hit my irons well today and was able to get a lot of opportunities for short birdie putts,” Sullivan said.

Schnitzer started off opposite of Sullivan, opening with four pars before carding a birdie on No. 5.

“I gave myself short birdie putts on the par-5's and played them at 3-under-par overall, that was key for me today,” he said.

Much like his fellow Texans, Redfern carded multiple birdies and hit a number of greens. The highlight of his day, however, was no bogeys on his card.

“I didn't have any bogeys on my card today,” Redfern said. “I played a really solid round and just hit quality golf shots all day.”

In a tie for fourth at 3-under-par 69 are Reid Martin of Mukilteo, Wash., Paul McConnell of Garland, Texas and Austin Rising of Albuquerque, N.M.

Yang had a successful day very similar to that of the boys' leaders. Carding four birdies, and only two 3-putt bogeys, she was able to fire a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine.

“I 3-putted Nos. 8 and 9 but was able to make up for it on the back nine,” Yang said. “Everything went really well for me today.”

In a tie for second at even-par 72, are Yang's playing partners Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., and Casey Grice of College Station, Texas.
