MCCARTHY PULLS AHEAD BY ONE HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND OF

JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT PETERSBURG

Feng takes lead at the Country Club of Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. – Denny McCarthy, 15, of Burtonsville, Md., carded a 4-under-par 68 Wednesday to lead the Boys Division by one stroke at the Junior All-Star at Petersburg. Yueer Cindy Feng, 12, of Orlando, Fla., shot a 1-under-par 71 to climb the Girls Division leaderboard.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Petersburg is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the Country Club of Petersburg. The 95-player field features juniors from 23 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 Country Club of Petersburg at 6,786 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,004 yards.

McCarthy was firing on all cylinders, hitting 13 fairways and carding birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 16 en route to a 6-under-par 30 on the back nine. McCarthy, who did not have a birdie putt outside of 18 feet, plans to stick to his game plan heading into the final round of his second AJGA event.

“I’m going to go out there and attack the flagsticks,” McCarthy said. “If I hit the fairways and drive the ball well, I’ll be able to keep it steady for the day.”

Adam Ball of Richmond, Va., and Alex Ehlert of Raleigh, N.C., are tied for second at 3-under-par 141. Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., and Grayson Murray, also of Raleigh, are tied for fourth at 2-under-par 142.

In the Girls Division, Feng hit 14 greens in regulation and carded four birdies; a vast improvement from the six greens she hit in the first round. Feng is comfortable holding the lead heading into the final round; she has already claimed victory at three Junior All-Star events this season.

“I’m going to do what I always do,” Feng said. “I’m going to play my own game, take one shot at a time and do my best.”

Megan Wilshire of Georgetown, Ky., and Shannon Aubert of Augusta, Ga., sit three strokes back at 6-over-par 150.
