DORAMUS TAKES ONE-SHOT LEAD AT DODGE/BOB ESTES ABILENE JUNIOR
Weaver, Paxton sit atop Girls Division at Abilene Country Club

ABILENE, Texas — Joe Doramus of Little Rock, Ark., made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to post a 4-under-par 68 and grasp an early one-stroke lead at the Dodge/Bob Estes Abilene Junior. Lauren Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Katie Paxton of Spring, Texas, both shot even-par 72s to share the Girls Division lead after Tuesday's opening round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Dodge/Bob Estes Abilene Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Abilene Country Club — Fairway Course. The tournament field consists of 89 boys and 30 girls, ages 12 to 18, from 12 states, Mexico, Japan and British Columbia. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 7,041 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,155 yards.

Doramus carded five birdies on the day and said his iron-play was crucial during the round.

“I'm making really simple, easy tempo swings,” Doramus said. “Just hit the green, it doesn't really matter how far you're hitting it.”

Thomas Birdsey of The Woodlands, Texas, and Andrew Wilcox of Duncan, Okla., sit tied for second each at 3-under-par 69. Scott Stark of San Antonio is in fourth place at 2-under-par 70. Curtis Reed of Castroville, Texas, James Clingman of San Antonio, Jeffrey Juillerat of Tyler, Texas, Ryan Kelley of The Woodlands, Colton Staggs of Tulsa, Okla., and John Cassidy also of Tulsa, are all tied in fifth place at 1-under-par 71.

In the Girls Division, Weaver had a triple bogey on No. 1, but quickly recovered, recording three birdies on the front nine to get back to even-par. Weaver never let the rough start affect her. She birdied No. 2 and regained confidence.

“I kept thinking, hit the ball in the fairway and get my irons as close as I can,” Weaver said. “It seemed to work.”

Paxton began the day with a birdie and played a consistent round with most of her success occurring on the greens.

“After I made the turn, putts were just dropping everywhere,” Paxton said of her 29 putts.

Sitting in third place is Shelby Hardy of San Saba, Texas, at 2-over-par 74.
