LEE ONLY GIRL TO BREAK PAR AT MCDONALD'S BETSY RAWLS GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP
Sylvan shoots even-par at White Manor Country Club

MALVERN, Pa. β€” A bright, sunny day at White Manor Country Club proved to be the perfect venue for the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship and Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., as she was the only girl to shoot under par, carding a 3-under-par 68. Three strokes behind Lee sits Katie Sylvan of San Diego, after shooting an even-par 71.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at White Manor Country Club. The 78-player field features players from 14 states, Canada, Colombia and Argentina. The par-71 course is being played at 6,186 yards.

Lee who is currently ranked 41st in the Polo Golf Rankings, played a strong round, firing four birdies including three on the back nine. Her well-placed approach shots left her in good positions, but the tough greens didn't make her job easy.

β€œThe putting greens are really tricky,” the 13-year-old said. β€œYou have to read the break really well to get it in.”

Lee, who played her first round at White Manor Country Club during the Junior-Am, says the key to success throughout the tournament will be to continue her putting and approach shots, but to work on her woods the next two days.

Sylvan, 17, played a consistent round, recording 13 pars on the day. She had three birdies to offset double bogey and bogey on Nos. 5 and 13, respectively.

β€œI was putting better and didn't miss many greens,” Sylvan said. β€œI was giving myself some birdie opportunities which was nice.”

Sylvan, who has verbally committed to play for the University of Virginia in 2009, is currently ranked 93rd in the Polo Golf Rankings. Her illustrious AJGA career includes first-place finishes at both the 2007 Dalhousie Junior Championship and the 2006 Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek.

Sitting four strokes behind Lee are Maria Piccio and Jessica Korda both of Bradenton, Fla., Stephanie Meadow of Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, and Grace Na of Oakland, Calif., who each carded a 1-over-par 72.
