CARSON LEADS TRADER JOE'S JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT 8-UNDER-PAR 134
Groetsema holds Girls Division top-spot entering final round at Castlewood Country Club

PLEASANTON, Calif. β€” Dennis Carson of Burlingame, Calif., sits atop of the leaderboard in the Boys Division at the Trader Joe's Junior Championship after recording a two-day total of 8-under-par 134 Wednesday. Alexandra Groetsema of Palo Alto, Calif., jumped to the front of the Girls Division after carding a two-day total of 1-over-par 143.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Trader Joe's Junior Championship is being played at the Castlewood Country Club - Hill Course. The tournament field consists of 99 players, 72 boys and 27 girls from nine states, Canada and Indonesia. The Boys Division is being played at 6,212 yards and the Girls Division at 5,744 yards.

Carson's consistent play helped keep him in the top seat of the leaderboard going into the final round. Recording birdies on Nos. 2, 7, 10, 11, 13, and 17, Carson carded a 4-under-par 67 for the second straight day.

β€œI was 3-under going into No. 17,” Carson said. β€œI almost drained my tee shot, but it rolled by about six feet. I made the putt to get birdie and to go 4-under.”

Two-strokes back of Carson sits Matt Crawford of Redwood City, Calif., at 6-under-par 136. In third, at 4-under-par 138, is Jonny Baxter of Pleasanton, Calif. In fourth, one-stroke behind Baxter is Jack Perry of Santa Barbara, Calif., at 3-under-par 139. In fifth is Jake Katz of Thousand Oaks, Calif., carding a 2-under-par 140.

Coming into the second round tied for third, Groetsema came from behind to lead the Girls Division, carding a 73-70β€”143. With a strong start off the No. 1 tee, Groetsema carded a birdie. Continuing her strong play, Groetsema made a surprise eagle on No. 5.

β€œMy hole-in from the fairway on No. 5 was a big surprise,” Groetsema said. β€œWhen I got to the green I didn't know where my ball was, but everyone was clapping. It took me a second, but I finally realized I had made an eagle.”

Groetsema carded the only under-par score for the Girls Division in the second round.

Rounding out the top three for the Girls Division is Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., at 2-over-par 144, and third at 4-over-par 146 sits Emily Talley of Napa, Calif.
