CARSON USES FIVE BIRDIES AND AN EAGLE TO OPEN WITH 4-UNDER-PAR 67
Hu leads in round one of her first AJGA open event at Castlewood Country Club

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Dennis Carson of Burlingame, Calif., used a surprise eagle on the par-5 No. 7 on his way to a 4-under-par 67 to lead after the first round of the Trader Joe's Junior Championship. In the Girls Division, Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., opened with an even-par 71 to lead her first AJGA Open event, Tuesday.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Trader Joe's Junior Championship is being played at the Castlewood Country Club - Hill Course. The tournament field consists of 99 players, 75 boys and 24 girls from nine states, Canada and Indonesia. The Boys Division is being played at 6,212 yards and the Girls Division at 5,744 yards.

Carson was unaware that No. 7 had been changed from a par-4 to a par-5 for this week's event until he went to record his score following the hole.

“I thought I was putting for birdie on my first putt,” Carson said. “It was a surprise to realize I had made an eagle after scoring a three on the hole.”

Familiar with the course, Carson knew it was important to keep the ball in play and avoid leaving the ball above the hole.

“I played well today because I kept it in play,” he said. “Nos. 7 and 8 are pretty tight, so getting by those at 2-under was key to my good round.”

In second at 3-under-par 68 is Matt Crawford of Redwood City, Calif. Jeffrey Hsiao of San Diego, Dalan Refioglu of Foster City, Calif., David Rohrs of Los Altos, Calif., and Jack Perry of Santa Barbara, Calif., are tied for third at 2-under-par 69.

Hu used a little bit of luck throughout her day to lead the Girls Division after the first round of play.

“I think I had some luck today,” Hu said. “I hit a chip on No. 4 and I thought it was going way past the hole, but then it dropped in for birdie.”

Hu is playing in her first AJGA open event after tying for third at last week's National Qualifier at Marshallia Ranch and had a second place finish earlier this year at the Medicus Preseason at Chateau Elan.

Finishing out the top three is Emily Talley of Napa, Calif., at 1-over-par 72, and in a three-way tie for third sits Alexandra Groetsema of Palo Alto, Calif., Katrina Hegge of Seattle, and Tiffany Lim of San Jose, Calif., all at 2-over-par 73.
