Cheng cards 1-under-par 71 to medal in Girls Division

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Brian Alle of Pacific Palisades, Calif., took home medalist honors in the qualifier for the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior Sunday, carding a 3-under-par 69. Anne Cheng of Torrance, Calif., sealed the top spot in the Girls Division after finishing with a 1-under-par 71.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Qualifier for the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior was held at the Westin Mission Hills Resort — Gary Player Signature Course. The tournament field consisted of 79 boys and 20 girls, ages 12-18, from five states. Ninety-three hailed from the home state of California. The Boys Division played the par-72 layout at 6,943 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,019 yards.

Alle did all of his scoring on the front nine, shooting a 3-under-par 33. Included in that nine was an eagle on No. 5.

“The putt was about 15 feet, and it was a little right-to-left,” Alle said. “I was going for the hole and stroked it well.”

Alle shot even-par on the back nine—enough to beat the second place finishers by two strokes. He credited his play in the qualifier to his putting.

“I eliminated three-putts,” Alle said. “The greens were true, and I rolled the ball well consistently.”

Also qualifying for the Boys Division in the tournament were Matthew Hansen of Los Osos, Calif., Kevin Stratton of Las Vegas, Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, Calif., William Byun of Beverly Hills, Calif., Raymond Ho of Cerritos, Calif., Joseph Choi of Bakersfield, Calif., Matthew Jun of Temecula, Calif., Kyle Knapp of Temecula, Calif., and Jeffrey Knox of Menlo Park, Calif.

Dalan Refioglu of Foster City, Calif., Ryan Niu of Coto De Caza, Calif., Taylor Keddington of Newport Beach, Calif., Nowell Ancheta of Quartz Hill, Calif., Jeffrey Hsiao of San Diego, Kyohei Itamura of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Jae Kang of Irvine, Calif., Daniel Covrig of Modesto, Calif., and Daniel Slovis of Woodland Hills, Calif. all qualified but opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Despite winning the Girls Division and earning a Tournament Exemption, Cheng was dissatisfied with some of her game. However, she managed to make up for her mistakes with stellar play in other parts of her game.

“I had a hard time getting it on the green with my longer irons,” Cheng said. “But my putting saved me.”

Qualifying in the Girls Division were Monica Umpant of Cerritos Calif., and Taylor Yoshitake of Playa del Rey, Calif.
