TRACY SOLIDIFIES BOYS DIVISION LEAD AT SAP JUNIOR OPEN
Wong takes five-stroke lead in Girls Division at Red Tail Golf Club
AVON, Ohio — Ethan Tracy of Hilliard, Ohio, took sole ownership of the lead at the SAP Junior Open Wednesday when he carded a two-day total of 4-under-par 140. In the Girls Division, Kristina Wong, 17, of Bradenton, Fla., took over as the two-day leader after firing an impressive 5-under-par 139.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the SAP Junior Open is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Red Tail Golf Club. The 120-player field features players ages 12-18 from 16 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,918 yards while the Girls Division is playing it at 6,106 yards.
After the first round, Tracy shared the lead with high school teammate David Haley, Jr., of Hilliard, Ohio, but he produced another under-par performance in the second round to further his lead and sit alone atop the leaderboard. Tracy, who carded two birdies and one bogey, will use the momentum gained from the first two rounds as a springboard to his final round.
“The course played a lot harder today,” Tracy said. “The pin placements were tough and I'm sure they will be even tougher tomorrow.”
In second place in the Boys Division is Richard Lamb of South Bend, Ind., with a two-day total of even-par 144. Sean Lombardo and Aaron Siekmann, both of Dublin, Ohio, posted a two-day total of 1-over-par 145 to tie for third place. Matthew Burkhart of Lancaster, Pa., is in fifth place with a tournament total 2-over-par 146.
In the Girls Division, Wong, a 2007 Rolex Junior All-American honorable mention, carded a 5-under-par 67 Wednesday and posted eight birdies en route to the second-round lead. While she is no stranger to tournament play, she has yet to win an AJGA event; her best finish being second in 2006 on three separate occasions. With 18 holes of golf left to play, Wong says her strategy is to stay patient and play smart in the final round.
“I've been striking the ball really well and I had more confidence in my drives today,” Wong said. “Tomorrow, I just want to stay focused and use the course knowledge I've gained over the past two days to help me make smart decisions.”
Sitting five strokes behind Wong at even-par 144 is the 2007 SAP Junior Open Girls Division Champion Tessa Teachman of Baton Rouge, La. Rounding out the top three is Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky, with a 3-over-par 147.
