TETRAULT TAKES LEAD FROM MARSICO IN SECOND ROUND AT AJGA LAS VEGAS JUNIOR
Weaver preserves lead in Girls Division heading into final round at Angel Park Golf Club

LAS VEGAS — Ryan Tetrault of Orange, Calif., shot a 2-under-par 69 to take the lead at the AJGA Las Vegas Junior Wednesday. Tetrault supplanted first round leader Max Marsico with a two-day total of 4-under par 138. Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., maintained her three-shot lead in the Girls Division with a two-day total of 4-under-par 138.

The AJGA Las Vegas Junior is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Angel Park Golf Club — Mountain Course. The tournament field consists of 57 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 9 states, China and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,680 yards, and the Girls Division is playing it at 6,031 yards.

Tetrault, who qualified for the tournament on Sunday, came into the day focused primarily on limiting his number of putts and hitting as many greens as possible. His mindset was fulfilled as he avoided particular places on the course and kept himself as close to the hole as possible.

“I hit a lot of greens and made lots of putts,” Tetrault said. “I just kept hitting greens, so I couldn't get in trouble.”

His round was highlighted by an eagle on No. 5—a hole on which he previously had a lot of trouble.

“I couldn't hit the fairway in the practice round with any club so finally I just pulled out a driver and hit a hard draw,” Tetrault said.

Finishing the day in the top five of the Boys Division are Marsico of Las Vegas and Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, tied for second with 3-under-par 139s. Jordan Cuthbert of Camarillo, Calif., is in fourth at 1-under-par 141 and Roberto Ruiz of Torreon, Mexico, Yi Keun Chang of Walnut, Calif., Benjamin Lein of Diamond Bar, Calif., AJ McInerney of Henderson, Nev., and Mason Field of Santa Barbara, Calif., all tied for fifth at even-par 142.

In the Girls Division, Weaver held the lead she built in the first round with better putting and a steady round.

“I was pretty consistent. I had 2 bogeys, 4 birdies, and I thought I just played better today—I made a lot more putts,” Weaver said.

Going into the final round, Weaver plans to focus solely on her own game and not be concerned about others—something she attempted Wednesday.

"I tried to keep up with other groups today, but it didn't work out,” Weaver said. “I'm going to try to not worry about anyone else. I'm just going to play my own game and focus on my own shots.”

Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division are Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., in second with a 1-under-par 141 and Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., in third with a 1-over par 143.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.
