MARSICO, WEAVER ON TOP AFTER FIRST ROUND AT AJGA LAS VEGAS JUNIOR
In first event since serious injury, Marsico pushes into lead by one shot

LAS VEGAS — Max Marsico of Las Vegas has made it apparent that he has returned to compete after injury by carding a 3-under-par 68 to take the lead after the first round of the AJGA Las Vegas Junior Tuesday. Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a 2-under-par 69 to lead after the first round in the Girls Division.

The AJGA Las Vegas Junior is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Angel Park Golf Club — Mountain Course. The tournament field consists of 57 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 9 states, China and Mexico. The Girls Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,031 yards, and the Boys Division is playing it at 6,680 yards.

Marsico, 17, is playing in his first AJGA tournament since fracturing his back during the ReBath Heather Farr Classic in April 2007. He also suffered a broken foot in November 2007, keeping him away from competition.

“I feel fine and it's great to be back,” Marsico said, who makes sure to stretch well and arrive to the course early to practice his swings.

Marsico recorded seven birdies on the day, crediting his low score to putting well and keeping the ball in play despite high winds.

“I managed the ball well today,” Marsico said. “I had a 30-foot putt on No. 4 that I made from above the hole and that really helped.”

Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Ryan Tetrault of Orange, Calif., both carded 2-under-par 69s to tie for second place. John Lee of Los Alamitos, Calif., Max Homa of Valencia, Calif., AJ McInerney of Henderson, Nev., and Yi Keun Chang of Walnut, Calif., all posted even-par 71s in a tie for fourth.

In the Girls Division, Weaver, spread three birdies and one bogey throughout her round, carding pars on the rest of Angel Park's Mountain Course.

“I only missed one or two greens today,” Weaver said, who birdied on No. 7 after draining a 35-foot putt.

“My strategy was to play my own game and not pay attention to anyone else,” Weaver said. “Taking the lead feels good because now I can play more freely tomorrow.”

Rounding out the top three girls spots after the first round are Danielle Kang of Oak Park, Calif., who is at even-par 71, and Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., who is 1-over-par at 72.
