MURRAY CLAIMS SUDDEN-DEATH VICTORY AT
STA-GREEN®
JUNIOR ALL-STAR CHAMPIONSHIP
Feng wins Girls Division at Peninsula Golf Club to remain undefeated in AJGA appearances

CORNELIUS, N.C. – Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., defeated Trevor Cone of Concord, N.C., in a sudden-death playoff that made for a final-round that some would call “the stuff that dreams are made of” to win the Boys Division at the Sta-Green® Junior All-Star Championship at The Peninsula Club. In the Girls Division, Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 for a tournament total 72-77-73 – 222 to claim her third victory.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Sta-Green® Junior All-Star Championship is the one of nine events in the AJGA's 2008 Junior All-Star Series, a collection of tournaments specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15. The competition provides an opportunity for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments. The Sta-Green® Junior All-Star Championship features 99 players from 224 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The field consists of 81 boys and 18 girls, ages 12-18. The Boys Division is playing The Peninsula Club par-72 course at 6,885 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,987 yards.

Murray went into the final hole of the tournament with a two-stroke lead over Cone. After Cone eagled the par-5 18th hole and Murray parred it, the two returned to the tee. At the conclusion of the first playoff hole, the two competitors finished tied — again — with birdies. In the second hole of the playoff, Murray's approach shot landed just inches from the hole for a tap-in eagle to secure his first AJGA victory.

“When we got to No. 18 and Trevor made eagle and I made par I knew we were going [into] a play-off,” Murray said. “It was awesome.”

“Awesome” was putting it mildly to describe the energy and anticipation that filled the dozens of onlookers who came out to watch the action.“I think this is the strongest field I have ever played in. I think with the AJGA there are so many strong players,” Murray said. “A lot of people played good golf.”

Both Murray and Cone finished the tournament at 8-under-par 208 placing Cone in second place after the sudden-death playoff. Michael Johnson of Birmingham, Ala. finished in third carding a tournament total 7-under-par 209 while Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif. finished in fourth with an even-par 75-71-70 — 216. Rounding out the top five was Billy Kennerly of Alpharetta, Ga., with a 2-over-par 218.

In the Girls Division, Feng maintained her composure throughout the final round carding birdies on Nos. 6, 9, and 14 to win by nine strokes.

“I was thinking about saving par on No. 6 because it was a hard chip but I birdied and it was good,” Feng said. “I am happy with my score today.”

Rounding out the top three were Davidson, N.C. local, Katie Kirk, who shot a 76-80-75 — 231 and Victoria Newbury of Williamsburg, Va., who carded a 80-74-70 — 233.The players in the Sta-Green® Junior All-Star Championship will look to follow the paths of notable juniors who played in Junior All-Star events and went on to become some of junior golf's greats, including Rolex Junior Players of the Year Peter Uihlein of Bradenton, Fla. (2005, 2007), and Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz. (2006).The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.
