SAXON, CLARK SHARE BOYS DIVISION LEAD AT THE JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT ASPEN
Alonso takes seven-shot lead after first round

ASPEN, Colo. β€” Charlie Saxon of Tulsa, Okla., and Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village, Colo., each fired a 4-under-par 68 to share the lead after the first round of the Junior All-Star at Aspen. Regina Alonso of Huixquilucan, Mexico, is in the top spot of the Girls Division with an even-par 72 Tuesday.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Aspen is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Aspen Golf Club. The tournament field consists of 57 boys and 17 girls, ages 12 to 15, from 15 states, Canada and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,836 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,042 yards.

Saxon felt his round started on No. 2 when he chipped in for birdie. He had seven birdies on the day, including four in a row on Nos. 11, 12, 13 and 14. It was his strong play on the green that helped him throughout his round.

β€œMy putter was hot the whole round,” Saxon said. β€œIt couldn't miss. I had 27 putts with three on the last hole. I was just making all the putts I looked at.”

Clark also goes into the second round tied for the lead. He carded five birdies on the day and he hopes to bring the same consistency into tomorrow's round.

β€œI want to try to hit my ball off the tee a little better,” Clark said. β€œI played solid, I'm just going to try and stick with my game plan, hit the green and make par.”

Marcel Puyat of Bradenton, Fla., who carded two eagles on the day, and Christopher Ingham of Pinecrest, Fla., are tied for third, each with a 2-under-par 70. Rounding out the Boys Division in fifth is Evan Markley of Scottsdale, Ariz., with a 1-under-par 71.

In the Girls Division, Alonso has a seven-shot lead over her nearest competitors. With only two bogeys, she was happy with the control of her ball.

β€œMy driver was straight and I hit 16 greens,” Alonso said. β€œThe altitude helped me because I'm from Mexico City and it's kind of the same.”

Tied for second are Katy Dyachkova of Centennial, Colo., and Olivia Lavy of Fayetteville, Ark., both with 7-over-par 79s.
