HOLLY, SCHNIEDERJANS AND STEWART SIT IN LEAD WITH 3-UNDER-PAR 69S
Feng leads Girls Division by five strokes at the Junior All-Star at Harmony
HARMONY, Fla. Reid Holly of Madison, Miss., Oliver Schniederjans of Powder Springs, Ga., and Thomas Stewart of St. Augustine, Fla., all carded rounds of 3-under-par 69 to sit atop the Boys Division leaderboard at the Junior All-Star at Harmony. Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., is the Girls Division leader after shooting a 6-under-par 66 Saturday.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Harmony is a 36-hole stroke play event being held at Harmony Golf Preserve. The tournament field consists of 63 boys and 15 girls, ages 12 to 15, from 21 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 layout at 6,864 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,002 yards.
Holly, who started on No. 10, got his round off to a good start when he parred his first two holes and made a remarkable hole-in-one on the 12th hole.
It was 209 yards down wind and I would've been happy with just being on the green, Holly said. It landed and then rolled about 25 to 30 feet to the hole. It was my first hole-in-one and it's what I've been waiting for. What a perfect time to get it in an AJGA event.
The 14-year-old Schniederjans, who claims he has never played a round of golf where he has not had fun, carded the first of his four birdies on No. 1.
I started with a tap in for birdie and that got my round going, Schniederjans said. Then on hole 15, I hit the perfect drive, a good wedge shot and made a five-foot putt for my last birdie of the day.
After three-putting No. 12, Stewart continued on to birdie three of his next five holes and made the turn at 2-under-par 34. The 15-year-old hit most of his fairways and credits his driving as the best part of his round.
I'm really pleased with how I played, Stewart said. I'm going to relax tonight and then I just want to play well tomorrow and hopefully get the win.
Christopher Ingham of Pinecrest, Fla., and Shane Convery of Raymond, Ill., round out the Boys Division leaderboard tied for fourth with 2-under-par 70s.
Feng, the co-champion of last week's Medicus Preseason Junior at Rochester presented by Wegmans LPGA and Xerox Classic, carded six birdies and no bogeys on her way to the day's low round. The 12-year-old goes into Sunday's final round leading by five strokes.
I played well and hit lots of greens, Feng said. I was able to hit it really close to the hole and it made my putts a lot easier. I only missed two of eighteen greens.
Also atop the Girls Division leaderboard is A.J. Newell of Tampa, Fla., in second with a 1-under-par 71. Nicole Quinn of Windermere, Fla., and Alexandra Milan of Lutz, Fla., are tied for third with even-par 72s.
