BRIERE MEDALS IN SRIXON QUALIFIER CARDING 2-UNDER-PAR 69
Cheung medals in Girls Division with 2-over-par 73

PLAINVILLE, Mass. β€” Joshua Briere of Newport, Vt., medaled in the AJGA Rhode Island Classic Srixon QualifIer Series by carding a 2-under-par 69 Monday. Tiffany Cheung of Bradenton, Fla., recorded a 2-over-par 73 to medal in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Rhode Island Classic Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Wentworth Hills Golf Club. The 100-player field featured players from 15 states and Ontario. The course was played at 6,182 yards for the Boys Division and 5,717 yards for the Girls Division.

Briere said he came into the qualifier with the same game plan as usual β€” hit fairways and greens. He also said that although he had a bad start to his round, being 3-over-par after the first four holes, he gained momentum by sinking six birdies by the end of his round. His birdies fell on Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, 12 and 17 giving him a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine and a 1-under-par on the back nine.

β€œI'm pretty excited to win this especially with the start I had,” Briere said. β€œI finished strong which was nice.”

Ten additional boys qualified for the tournament. Branden Chicorka of Enfield, Conn., Manny Tulumaris of Hartford, Conn., Jon Lussier of Barton, Vt., and Kyle Stucklen of Sayville, N.Y., all carded 1-under-par 70s. Connor Wentzell of Worcester, Mass., posted an even-par 71. Joshua Salah of Gloucester, Mass., Jake Wagman of Toronto, Ontario, and Ian Thimble of Hyde Park, Mass., all shot 1-over-par 72s. Patrick Gocklin of Manchester, N.H., recorded a 2-over-par 73. Qualifying after a one-hole sudden-death playoff was Kyle Fardlemann of Washington, N.J., posting a 3-over-par 74.

Qualifying but opting to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event was Kyle Kszepka of Wilbraham, Mass., shooting a 2-over-par 73.

In the Girls Division, Cheung said her long chip for eagle on No. 4 gave her a boost of confidence for the rest of her round. She followed it with birdies on Nos. 7 and 14 to give her a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine and a 1-over-par 36 on the back nine.

β€œI just tried to stay focused and relaxed and not panic when I hit a bad shot,” Cheung said. β€œAt the tournament I'll focus on the tee and my swing and what's ahead.”

Also qualifying for the tournament were Lynda Kwon of North Wales, Pa., carding an 8-over-par 79 and Alexandra Lipa of Birmingham, Mich., recording a 9-over-par 80.
