IM CARDS NINE BIRDIES AT TEE UP JUNIOR CHALLENGE

Morris holds the top spot at 2-under-par 69 at Industry Hills Golf Club’s Zaharias Course

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.Michael Jae Woo Im of Fullerton, Calif., holds the leader position after the first round of the TEE UP Junior Challenge at 6-under-par 65.  Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., sits atop of the Girls Division at 2-under-par 69 on Industry Hills Golf Club’s Zaharias Course.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, The TEE UP Junior Challenge is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 60 boys and 24 girls ages 12-18 from four states and one foreign country with 74 juniors from California. The event is being staged on the par-71 Industry Hills Golf Club’s Zaharias Course with boys tees set at 6,635 yards and girls tees at 5,983 yards.

With two top five finishes in the 2007 AJGA season, including his first win, Im shot 65 for the second time in his golf career.  Going into the first round Im says he was not nervous due to the fact it is his home course.  After carding nine birdies, Im says he hopes to shoot a more consistent second round.

“I am happy with my overall play today,” Im said. “I usually play more consistently, so tomorrow my goal is to shoot par and play safe to stay in competition for the title of champion.”

Hyun Seok Lim of Fullerton, Calif., holds the second position at 5-under-par 66.  In third place Ramsey Sahyoun of Reseda, Calif., at 4-under-par 67.  Tied for fourth place are Boris Stantchev of Long Beach, Calif., and Alex Kang of Oak Park, Calif., at 3-under-par 68.

In the Girls Division, Morris carded four birdies to turn in a 2-under-par 69.  Coming into the tournament, Morris said she had been working on some adjustments with her swing and was happy with her results.

“I had a birdie on No. 2, so that was a good way to start my round,” Morris said. “The birdie on No.18 was a good way to finish too. I felt really good after this round.”

In second place is Sarah Salvo of Glendale, Calif., at even-par 71.  Bethany Glassford of Henderson, Nev., holds third place at 2-over-par 73.
